Apprenticeship

Business Administration

My Apprentice job summed up

I work in the Client Security team, where I’m responsible for maintaining the security of our customers’ IT systems. I create and maintain risk registers, to ensure security systems are up to date, implementing anti-virus updates and patching servers to ensure systems can’t be hacked. Through internal and customer meetings I review any security risks identified and recommend actions to be taken to mitigate those risks.

I was placed straight onto customer facing work on a key account where I created bespoke documents to ensure compliance with security audits. I’m now the sole security manager for a large transport sector account, which is challenging and provides thought provoking day to day work. This challenge has shown me that this is the career for me because every day is different, and I can have a real impact, even within a large company.

What impact do you feel you’ve had since joining?

Working for such a large company it seemed impossible to make an impact when you’re only just starting out – I soon found out that I couldn’t have been more wrong. I’ve got to understand the commitments we’ve made to our customers, and have ensured that the security of their systems is kept up to date at all times, ensuring we are meeting our contractual commitments, and avoiding any financial penalties for non-compliance. Having greater responsibilities on my second account has really boosted my confidence and with the fantastic support network around me I never feel nervous in my role, even when dealing with critical documents and processes.

I have also been asked to participate in the interview process for new intakes, again demonstrating the trust that Atos has in all their employees, including their apprentices, as this will have an impact on the future of the business.

What have you learned since starting your apprenticeship?

Since joining Atos, I have developed both personally and professionally. My IT skills were at GCSE level prior to joining Atos, but due to formal and informal training my business and IT skills have improved dramatically. Atos encourage an environment of learning alongside working, helping me build invaluable experience. I’ve really developed my confidence and communication skills, working with people of all levels, and run regular client meetings to update them on progress on their account.

When looking for apprenticeships I was unsure on what career I wanted to pursue, but after getting this job at Atos I now know what I want to do and strive for, using what motivates me to get me to this point. I very much look forward to continuing an exciting career within Atos.
