The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) chooses Atos for conclusion of a Big Data Proof of Concept
London, 14th December 2015
Atos, an international leader in digital services, today announced that the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) has chosen Atos to support its launch of a core research programme to enhance the data analytics applied in the manufacturing sector.
The development of this Proof of Concept will test the capabilities of the Hadoop data analytics suite on the MTC’s High Performance Computing (HPC), in order to assess its impact on the Manufacturing sector and the benefits that could be found in data mining, streaming analytics and fast, in-memory processing.
The MTC develops and tests innovative manufacturing processes and technologies in an agile, low risk environment, with some of the most advanced manufacturing equipment and highly skilled engineers, for the development and demonstration of new processes and technologies on an industrial scale.
As part of their core research programme, the MTC has installed Hadoop on its HPC supercomputer from Bull, the Atos brand for its technology products and software. MTC also appointed Atos to develop the proof of concept.
“The MTC has identified Big Data as critical to support the step towards Industry 4.0 and data driven decision making in manufacturing. The support from Atos enabled the MTC to develop the skills and capability to support British manufacturing organisations in adopting this technology,” said Dr Daniel Peavoy, Technology Manager at the MTC and currently leading the Big Data area.
Andy Grant, Atos Vice President and head of Big Data and Security said: “We are very pleased with the collaboration with the MTC which has clearly demonstrated the benefits that big data technologies bring to traditional HPC environments enabling new insight. Whether it is for improved diagnostics or preventative maintenance, Big Data will revolutionise manufacturing industry and it is great to see the MTC investing in the skills and techniques for the benefit of the UK manufacturing base.”
The proof of concept used Atos Bullx blade technology and parallel file systems for the Hadoop implementation for fast in memory processing of MTC data using Apache Spark. Atos’ big data consultants worked alongside MTC during the evaluation.
The research has highlighted several areas where this compute facility will support the MTC’s strength in Informatics including understanding the link between the manufacturing route and product quality, or machine monitoring and diagnostics.
Atos is helping a number of manufacturers across a range of sectors embrace digital transformation and is the number one digital services provider to the European manufacturing industry.
