Atos set to play key Games role as countdown continues to Glasgow 2014

International IT services company, Atos, has announced it is on target to deliver one of the most advanced games management and information technology systems ever used at a Commonwealth Games for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

As the company marked the ‘50 days to go’ to opening ceremony milestone for Glasgow 2014, senior Atos executives have stated that the company’s experience of more than two decades of support to the Olympic and Paralympic Games around the world would help power new levels of performance from the vital support systems required to deliver a successful Games.

At Games time, with a dedicated team of 60 business technologists working behind the scenes in Glasgow supported by a huge team in the Atos international events headquarters in Barcelona and Madrid, the company will help deliver an unprecedented level of technical support to Glasgow 2014.

As an Official Supporter, Atos has been working closely with the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee for over two years to deliver a range of essential Games Management and Information Systems, including the volunteer portal, the games workforce management system, the accreditation management system and the games information systems.

With an expected global viewing audience of around 1.5 billion, up to 1 million ticket holders expected, 4,500 athletes participating and more than 2,500 journalists covering Glasgow 2014, the role played by Atos in delivering Games information and results will be essential for all involved.

Atos’ Games Management System and Games Information Systems:

  • Has supported the Glasgow 2014 team in the recruitment of the 15,000 volunteer Clyde-siders (50,811 applications were processed)
  • Is in the process of accrediting participants, managing registration, assigning access privileges, and access control information for 70,000 people involved in the Games (including athletes, officials, workforce, Clyde-siders, media and sponsors)
  • Will in real-time provide accurate information and results for each of the athletes participating at each stage of competition, in each of the Games’ 17 sports to worldwide media organisations, sports officials and websites.

Atos Senior Vice President in Scotland, Gavin Thomson, said the company was placing significant emphasis on ensuring the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games was the best and most successful Commonwealth Games ever.

“The stadia are impressive, the ticket sales are outstanding and it is our job to ensure that the Games Management Systems and Games Information Systems live up to the standards expected of a modern day Games in today’s technology driven world,” he added.

“Our team of business technologists are already powering performance at the heart of the Games, and as we enter a critical period in terms of the accreditation and workforce preparation we are working flat out to deliver the best possible results for Glasgow 2014. The whole event is highly visible with the world watching. It’s where victory is measured by the smallest margin, and for us there are no second chances.”

“Atos is one of the few proven delivery experts in this field thanks to our significant expertise as Worldwide IT Partner for the Olympic and Paralympic Games and we believe this will reflect positively on everything we do for Glasgow 2014. We are passionate about delivering world-class solutions from Scotland on the world stage.”

Brian Nourse, Chief Information Officer for Glasgow 2014 said: “The challenge of delivering the technology solutions for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games requires all of our partners and suppliers to work as a seamless team, closely integrated with our own technology team and the wider Organising Committee. Atos was one of our early technology partners and has made a major contribution to some of our most important technology solutions.

“The final preparations for the delivery of the Games are well under way and we are confident that the significant level of planning and testing already undertaken will help ensure the technology solutions being deployed by Atos for the Games are on track to meet the expectations of all involved.”

Atos has invested heavily and continues to invest in jobs and development in Scotland, employing 1500 people in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Forres, Glasgow, Inverness, Linwood and Livingston.
