My Background
Despite my History degree having nothing to do with business or technology, I developed a solid set of skills that were transferable into the world of sales. Presentations, debating, persuading others to your point of view, research, analysis and writing out structured essay answers are all abilities I’ve utilised in my current role – whether it’s pitching to customers, responding to bid questions, facilitating client workshops or analysing reports.
I believe that technology is changing the world and I’ve always wanted to be part of that change, so working for an organisation focused on the digital transformation of its customers was always an ambition. Atos is a multinational company and a global leader in its field – so the next choice was easy. Working across both the private and public sectors, Atos boasts an impressive customer base. From leading banks, retail chains and telecommunications giants, the company works with some of the highest calibre clients around.
With so many opportunities, avenues and resources to take advantage of, I knew I’d get the chance to work alongside colleagues across a range of professions. From Sales and Business Consulting to Cyber Security and Data Analytics, the chance to learn so much from people who are specialists in what they do appealed to me enormously.
The best thing about working for Atos is the people and the amount you can learn from them. Working with specialists who are passionate about what they do and who are keen to develop your skills in their area creates a really positive and collaborative environment. The work-life balance is also great. I’m always busy, but Atos’s flexible working allows me to work remotely and from home at my discretion.
My job summed up
I work as an Account Manager for a key public sector client – my role is to maintain existing relationships and develop new ones. We are here to understand the client’s needs and requirements and offer appropriate technology solutions to help improve the running of their business, and the services they deliver to citizens. This involves pitching proactive ideas to the customer during innovation workshops, organising demonstrations of proof of concepts, and responding to bids and tenders that are released to the supplier market. I’m also responsible for managing our sales pipeline and producing reports on the public sector landscape.
Away from the day job, I take part in a number of extracurricular activities, from getting involved in university careers fairs and mentoring apprentices to organising graduate trips to London Tech Week and attending team social events. I’m also a finalist for ‘Atos X’, which is an annual TED Talk competition sponsored by one of our Senior Vice-Presidents. Graduates from across the organisation get to deliver a 15-minute presentation on a digital topic of their choice; you’re assigned a mentor and get to talk through your story in our Business Technology & Innovation Centre to a full room of Atos executives and colleagues.
A day in my life
0900-1100
After grabbing a coffee, I will check through my emails, run through my calendar schedule and start writing up my to-do list. We then hold a team meeting to run through our sales pipeline and discuss any new or ongoing opportunities.
1100-1300
Later in the morning, I focus on bid responses. If we have a live opportunity that’s been released to the supplier market, we will be writing answers to questions, researching suitable technology solutions and pulling together the best bid team possible so we can build an effective proposal and hopefully win the business.
1300-1500
During the afternoon, I might be attending a market engagement event, visiting a client or attending a supplier day. If I’m in the office, I will usually be planning an innovation workshop or working with our marketing team to try to come up with some effective sales messaging and branding.
1500-1700
Later, I will be having a call with one of our partner companies to discuss how we might be able to work together to tackle a customer’s challenge and deliver an effective solution. I will then complete some online training modules to further my technical knowledge on some of Atos’s key offerings.
1700 till late …
I could end the day by working on my ‘Atos X’ TED Talk, getting up to speed with the latest news on technology and politics or having a catch-up with my manager about my career development.
