Smart City StarterK!t wins Strategic Sourcing Award for most innovative Digital Business Ecosystem

Amstelveen, 17 December 2018 – Atos, the Dutch Institute for Technology Safety and Security (DITSS) and the municipality of Eindhoven have been awarded with a Strategic Sourcing Award in the category Digital Business Ecosystem. This year, the Strategic Sourcing Award focused on cloud sourcing, agile and ecosystems. In the category Ecosystems this prestigious prize has been awarded to the Smart City StarterK!t that was launched in March 2018. The Smart City StarterK!t is a digital toolkit that enables municipalities to develop a strategy and supports them with technological solutions to implement a Smart City in only a few days. The toolkit supports Dutch cities with the development of urban digital applications.

The Strategic Sourcing Awards, an initiative of CIO Magazine, are being awarded to organizations that have demonstrated their ability to innovate based on the power of strategic sourcing. According to the jury, Atos, Eindhoven municipality and DITSS have won this price, because they have introduced an ecosystem that enables organizations to innovate through digitization.

Smart City StarterK!t

The Smart City StarterK!t supports municipalities with tools that can accelerate their transformation towards a Smart City. The toolkit includes a number of strategic instruments of Eindhoven municipality, such as the Principles for a Digital City (developed in collaboration with the municipality of Amsterdam) and the IoTCharter. This is a set of basic agreements that supports municipalities during their transition into a Smart Society. Moreover, the toolkit includes an installation guide as well as software to implement a FIWARE platform. This platform is based on an open source standard that has been developed on a European level and offers the possibility to integrate Smart City implementations.

Together with DITSS, Atos has launched an open source platform in the Netherlands. This platform is based on European de-facto standard FIWARE, OASC and SynchroniCity components, interfaces and data models. The IT provider is hosting the platform as well. Atos not only offers a technological platform in the cloud, but can also enable cities to make progression during separate projects, by means of integration on a platform towards Urban Data Management. Since the launch of the Smart City StarterK!t, the digital toolkit has been downloaded over 200 times. Municipalities can apply for the starters kit simply by sending an email and receive it by means of a secured mail.

Albert Seubers, Director Global Strategy IT in Cities at Atos: “Data tells the stories of citizens that define cities. With the Smart City StarterK!t, DITSS and Atos offer the possibility to gather data and bring these stories alive. For cities, Urban Data Management is a crucial for their success”.

“DITSS has the ambition to contribute to relevant technologies and policies to create a safe environment within living labs and practice-oriented innovation environments. Recently, we have launched the first experimental lab for digital policies in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior Affairs, municipalities, companies and citizens,” states Leon Verver, Director of DITSS.

”Digitization of the public space offers a lot opportunities, but includes a number of dilemma’s as well. As a local government, we have the responsibility to safeguard agreements related to privacy, security, open data and open standards during this digital transition,” comments Mieke van Schaik, Strategic Information Consultant of Eindhoven municipality. “Therefore, our municipality is active on a local and national level in order to translate policies, such as the Principles for a Digital City, into tools that other cities can implement as well. This is the unique selling point of the Smart City StarterK!t, a solution developed by DITSS and Atos in close collaboration with our municipality”,
