“Atos shortlists 11 university teams in its third global IT challenge”

Successful entries show how technology can enhance our Olympic Games experience

Atos, an international IT services company and Worldwide IT Partner for the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee, today announced the shortlist for its third global IT challenge that is looking for applications to improve the user’s experience at the Rio 2016 Olympic & Paralympic Games.

The 11 successful entries are from universities in Brazil, France, India, South Korea, UK and the USA. They include mobile apps to help follow the results of your teams; plan your day; order food and drinks to your seat in the stadium; share photos; compete against your friends as well as helping the organisers run a smooth event.

This year’s competition is supported by the IOC, the IPC and the Rio2016 Organising Committee and the judging panel includes representatives from all three of these organisations as well as the Atos Scientific Community – a global network of around 100 of the best business technologists within Atos. The eleventh shortlisted team – Nuri from South Korea – was selected because it received the highest number of votes on Facebook.

On the selection of the shortlist, Gilles Grapinet, Senior Executive Vice President, Global Functions at Atos, said; “Once again we have been impressed by the high standard and quality of the entries. All those shortlisted have identified how through the use of smart technology, we can further enhance the Olympic & Paralympic Games experience. We wish all 11 teams the very best of luck in the final stage of the challenge and look forward to seeing how the students use their knowledge and creativity to turn these ideas into commercially viable apps that work in a real environment.”

The shortlisted entries are:

  • Codezine from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil – an app that enables you to order drinks or food to your seat in the stadium.
  • eirbDev from the University Enseirbmatmeca in France – an app that plans your day of sport and sightseeing based on your preferences. You can view your schedule as a timeline or a map and the app will guide you from one location to the next.
  • Greenkiwi from the Universidade Estadual de Londrina in Brazil – an app which brings you the competition news and results about only the countries and athletes you want to follow. It is also a gaming app, letting you score points against your friends or all users, if you predict the winning athlete or team.
  • Level 1 from the University of Loughborough in the UK – an app to help guide disabled people around the city and the Olympic venues. It provides information on wheelchair accessible routes, restaurants, taxi services, toilets and other facilities.
  • Nuri from the University of Dankook in South Korea – an app to share photos of what is happening in and around the Olympics with all users based on their personal selection criteria.
  • Platter from Columbia University in the USA – an app with an interactive map and GPS locator, so users can find the location of shops, food outlets, bus stops, first aid services and also the opening times and services available.
  • Quandrum from the People’s Education Society Institute of Technology Bangalore in India – an augmented reality app to provide essential information, such as hotel availability and directions to the stadium, and a photo gaming experience where at the end of your trip you receive a video compilation showing your holiday highlights.
  • Real Forest from University of Nottingham in the UK – an app that enables spectators, volunteers and athletes to report an incident directly to the organisers so it can be dealt with and resolved immediately.
  • SHIFT+CTRL from Aston University in the UK – an app for organisers and volunteers so that volunteers can be allocated quickly to the locations where they are most needed.
  • Team Chocobo from Loughborough University in the UK – an app for fantasy athletics challenging players to build a team of athletes to compete against friends and other fans to win the league.
  • VSio from the University of Delhi in India – an app to give you all the information you need for your stay and a planning tool so you can write your own itinerary.

One Atos Challenge Coach from the Atos Scientific Community will be assigned to each shortlisted team to help them to take the idea through to a fully functional proof of concept. The Challenge Coach will provide help with technical and business insights, as well as advice to improve their all-important presentation skills necessary for business in the technology world.

The three finalists will be announced in May 2014, and the overall winner at an awards ceremony in June 2014. Finalist prize winners will be awarded an Atos Diploma demonstrating outstanding achievement and the chance to apply for highlysought after internships at Atos. Each member of the overall winning team will also win a trip of a lifetime to Barcelona. The prestigious prize will include return flights, accommodation, as well as visit the Atos Olympic Games ITexcellence center and meet our Experts (IOC / IPC / Rio / Atos) to investigate if and how we can support to develop their app.

Each year Atos recruits around 7000 engineers globally. The IT Challenge forms part of Atos Wellbeing@work initiative and supports its objective to encourage and develop talent.
