Atos Green Network & Together Network present COP27: Climate Injustice in Africa
On Monday 14th November 2022, Atos Green Network and Together Network hosted a webinar on the climate injustice in Africa with over 100 attendees. Climate injustice refers to the idea that the most affluent populations contribute the most to climate change but are least impacted by the effects.
Guest speakers – Mwende Mbevi, East Africa Director of the Most Influential People of African Descent & Roman De Rafael, Head of Project Development, Nature Based Solutions at Eco Act – explored how and why climate change is affecting different groups, specifically vulnerable communities in Africa. Mwende Mbevi spoke about how individuals can help to amplify the voices of marginalised and at-risk people by raising awareness of climate injustice. Roman De Rafael shared how Atos and Eco Act support projects across Africa to deliver tangible and measurable benefits to the communities in which they operate, empowering them to have ownership of a more sustainable future.
Despite being responsible for the smallest share of global greenhouse gas emissions of 2-3%, Africa is the most vulnerable region to climate change in the world. With the arrival of the 27th United Nations Climate Change conference or COP27, climate injustice in Africa is a subject that needs more awareness and funding. There is hope that COP27 will draw attention to the severe effects of climate change across the continent.
