Digitalizing migration services for BAMF through specialized testing

Helping deliver smarter migration services for Germany–powered by AI, automation and specialized testing

At a glance

Atos modernized BAMF’s MARiS platform, automating 250 activities, enhancing efficiency with specialized testing and aligning methodologies for seamless integration and a comprehensive test strategy.

Outcomes

  • Automated ~250 activities within the MARiS platform
  • Replaced internal BAMF testing with a dedicated Atos team to increase efficiency
  • Strengthened system reliability through comprehensive regression and acceptance testing

Client Challenge

As Germany’s central authority for migration and integration, the Federal Office (BAMF) plays a key role in processing asylum applications, ensuring refugee protection, promoting integration and conducting migration research. By digitalizing critical processes using advanced technologies like blockchain and AI, BAMF accelerates asylum procedures from entry to integration or return.

Solution

The MARiS platform supports the asylum process through over 50 sub-processes and around 1,000 activities, with around 250 now automated. Originally built with OpenText DOMEA and redeveloped in-house in 2017, it uses 1,100 document templates in 180 languages. MARiS manages scanning, creation, processing, dispatch and secure archiving of documents.

Since 2016, Atos has supported BAMF’s MARiS modernization by providing consultants for rollout, hotline support, test management, and middleware implementation. With version 3.1, Atos formed a specialized testing team to perform thorough regression and acceptance tests, replacing internal testing by BAMF teams and allowing them to focus on core functions.

Business Benefits

An onsite test team was set up in collaboration with BAMF experts, leading to a comprehensive test strategy. Atos also contributed to related projects, aligning different methodologies (e.g., waterfall and agile) and technologies within the MARiS ecosystem.
