Client Challenge

The International Olympic Committee brings together all parties of the Olympic family, including the athletes, organizing committees, worldwide Olympic partners, media broadcasters, the United Nations (UN) and other international organizations.

For such a major sporting event watched by billions of fans across the globe, the IOC needed a reliable technology partner to help define an IT master plan and manage the overall IT program for Paris 2024. The Atos teams have been engaged with the Olympic movement for the past 35 years, consistently bringing innovation, and the year 2024 was no exception.

Solution

During the run-up to the games, the team carried out more than 250 000 hours of testing at the Integration Testing Lab (ITL) in Madrid and the Technology Operation Centre (TOC) in Paris to make sure all systems were ready to go.

The Olympic Management System (OMS) handled the accreditations, competition schedules, voting applications, the volunteer portal and the operational teams, while the Olympic Diffusion System (ODS) transmitted the results from the events.

In addition to the IT systems, Atos also took care of the various teams involved to make sure everything ran smoothly across the operational locations. This meant bringing together 2 000 experts across 15 technology partners and suppliers and coordinating the Central Technology Operation Centre (CTOC) in Barcelona with 90 Atos experts and 350+ venue IT managers.

Supporting the 60 venue results managers was also crucial, as they were responsible for correctly gathering and publishing performance data and statistics on the ODS, within an impressive timeframe of 0.35 seconds before it was broadcast on the competition’s websites and other media.

Business Benefits

Overall, Atos successfully integrated, managed and secured the critical IT systems to offer billions of fans around the world the most digital Olympic and Paralympic Games in history.

Fans, journalists and broadcasters received almost real-time results from over a thousand events, keeping every viewer up to date on the live action. Atos’s Commentator Information System (CIS) transmitted results in less than 0.5 seconds and the MyInfo app allowed remote journalists to access athlete information and Olympics news services on the go, directly from their devices.

This year, Atos introduced innovations like the AI-enabled Volunteer Portal and Smart Knowledge Hub with GenAI capabilities. These innovations enhanced operational efficiency, aligning with the IOC’s AI agenda. What’s more, Atos also piloted a Gen AI-based chatbot for simple and efficient access to ethics and compliance information for 800 IOC employees.

Finally, Eviden’s cybersecurity solutions provided proactive threat protection and rapid incident response, ensuring the safety of the Olympic and Paralympic Games’ critical infrastructure so everyone could enjoy the games with peace of mind.
