Atos and the system integrator INTACT upgraded the SAP HANA platform of Norilsk Nickel with Atos servers

Moscow, November 13, 2018

Atos, global leader in digital transformation, supplied high-end servers to Norilsk Nickel. Due to the efforts of the system integrator INTACT, the hardware-software complex was put into operation in the shortest possible time.

The Norilsk Nickel is the leader of the Russian mining and metallurgical industry and one of the largest producers of nickel and palladium in the world.

The prerequisite for upgrading the IT complex was the implementation of ambitious projects on the SAP HANA platform by Norilsk Nickel, and as a result, an increase demand of computing power and data storage for the operation of mission-critical business applications. The challenge was to expand the existing landscape in terms of computing power despite the hardware limitations of vertical scalability and to ensure high availability of the platform. To solve this issue IT infrastructure department of the Norilsk Nickel decided to use hybrid technology.

IT integrator INTACT with the Bullion servers, provided by Atos, became the winner of the competition for solving this issue. To solve this issue, Atos and INTACT designed a solution that have a sufficient capacity to expand and support further growth. The solution consists of two rack-mount Bullion S8 servers which include data storage system. The equipment was delivered as SAP HANA appliance. In addition, this project provided capacity for high availability and for testing and development of the SAP HANA platform: the Bullion S8 server and two Bullion S6 servers with a single hybrid storage system connected to them. Equipment was delivered as Tailored Data Center Integration.

As part of the installation work, INTACT specialists, with the participation of the Norilsk Nickel IT division, installed the server and storage systems in racks, connected them to the existing data center infrastructure, and developed a set of engineering documentation for integrating the solution without service interruption. In fact, all this work was performed during the New Year holidays.

As a result of the project, the amount of computing power and data storage resources have significantly increased. In addition, the upgrade has significantly increased the speed of the SAP landscape applications. The implemented solution provides investment protection for the testing and development segment, as it is easy to scale by expanding the Bullion servers from S6 to S8 and S8 to S10, S12, S14 or S16, equipped with 10-16 CPUs, respectively, without having to replace the existing computing power.

“Atos servers came to the Russian market not a long time ago, and for now this project is the first one for SAP HANA installation in Russia, although we have extensive experience abroad in implementing such solutions” says Roman Gots, Head of Big Data and Security at Atos Russia.

“Today the using of high-performance platforms for storing and processing data, including SAP HANA, one of the leaders in this segment, is a serious trend which will only strengthen in future. Therefore, the popularity of Atos scalable servers will grow” said Alexander Zykov, CEO at INTACT. “We are pleased that we were able to help Norilsk Nickel company to modernize its IT infrastructure and create a technological basis for further business development.”
