National Center for Biotechnology
The Biocomputing Unit (BCU) at the National Center for Biotechnology (CNB), part of the Spanish Research Council, has contributed to the fight against Coronavirus by refining the 3D structure of the coronavirus spike. This is the protein involved in our body’s immune response and the one targeted by current Covid-19 vaccines. The BCU, along with Instruct, the European Research Infrastructure providing open access to high-end structural biology services and techniques, and Atos’ Life Science Center of Excellence and its Intel-based Bull Sequana supercomputer, used high performance computing and complex algorithms to process and analyse images from cryo electron microscopy into a 3D model.
