Digitally transforming healthcare for Western Australia

How to support end-to-end-pathology services in real time

At a glance

PathWest replaced an aging pathology system with a single laboratory information system platform provided as an agile infrastructure as a service.

Outcomes

  • Faster turnaround times
  • Increased accuracy and reliability
  • Improved specimen identification
  • Fewer system outages
  • Regular reporting and performance metrics
  • Agile, optimized service to flex and grow

“The implementation of a new single and modern laboratory information system (LIS) has been one of the most significant improvements to Western Australia’s public pathology services in 30 years. The new LIS environment is now performing in real time, in real hospital conditions, and is supported by an infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) platform provided by Atos.”

Martin Coleman
Manager of Information Systems, PathWest Laboratory Medicine WA

PathWest is a Western Australia Government Agency committed to providing pathology services and contributing to the wellbeing and safety of its community. PathWest operates over 50 collection centers, 22 branch laboratories and 5 teaching hospital laboratories.

Pathology: an essential public health service

With over 16 million tests performed annually, pathology is one of the most important services within the public health system. Over 70% of clinical decisions and 100% of cancer diagnoses rely on fast, accurate pathology.

To provide effective services, PathWest requires a stable, accurate, efficient, secure and well-supported laboratory information system (LIS) that manages the end-to-end process of providing pathology results. As part of the digital transformation of healthcare in Western Australia, PathWest wanted to replace its complex LIS and databases with a single modern system.

Giving access to pathology data in real time

Drivers for replacing PathWest’s existing system were an aging infrastructure, with limited potential for growth and flexibility. A key ambition was to increase PathWest’s ability to store and leverage real-time data and biometrics.

Migrating to a single modern system

Atos was engaged to devise a single end-to-end LIS solution that would create a more agile environment for PathWest’s pathology operations. Atos worked in close collaboration with PathWest, following defined IT service management processes to bring the new into platform production. Critical to success was robust governance, close partnership and ongoing communication with key stakeholders to meet technical and delivery challenges.

Real time, real benefits

PathWest’s new LIS environment now performs in real time, in real hospital conditions. It provides significantly improved functionality for tracking specimens through their testing journey, with the ability to handle a wide range of modern testing requirements. Benefits include:

  • Faster turnaround times
  • Increased accuracy and reliability
  • Improved specimen identification
  • Fewer system outages.
