A major biofuel producer modernizes the back office with SAP S/4HANA and implements Google digital workplace solutions to help grow and compete sustainably.
Outcomes
uisa harnessed the efficiency and data processing power of SAP S/4HANA to provide enhanced data intelligence and transparency for logistics, supply chain and industrial systems.
Its new Google Workspace platform creates a productive, connected work environment for employees anywhere, including remote worksites.
Headquartered in Mato Grosso, Brazil, uisa grows sugarcane and processes it — as much as 6.3 million tons in one harvest period — into sugars and sugar by products like ethanol. uisa manages complex logistics to send its products by road and river to markets throughout central and western Brazil. The company also generates electricity from sugarcane bagasse, making it self-sufficient. For twenty years, it’s been generating in the offseason and selling surplus electricity to energy concessionaires.
uisa was using an older version of SAP in a highly customized and integrated environment. The company’s digital strategy had been transforming other parts of the organization, with smarter agricultural practices, for example. Now the digital imperative was to improve its back-office and workplace efficiencies using cloud-based systems.
“Besides seeking to increase efficiency and agility gains, through our journey of innovation, we also want to change the way of doing and thinking about technology for agribusiness,” said Rodrigo Ribeiro Gonçalves, executive manager of Technology, Automation and Innovation at uisa.
It partnered with SAP and Google to upgrade to S/4HANA with Google Cloud integrated with Google Workspace.

Big tech and biofuel converge
Atos worked side-by-side with uisa specialists to study and define what is most modern in integrated business management and associated technology.
Based on the study, the two companies designed a solution that uses SAP S/4HANA in a public cloud architecture for Google Cloud and a state-of-the-art data lake environment. In parallel, uisa had chosen Google Workspace for its advanced digital workplace platform.
Rather than working with separate companies to implement each system, it selected Atos to manage both projects from start to finish.
Putting digital to work
SAP S/4HANA is simply more powerful and efficient than the previous version. uisa will also benefit from enhanced data-processing capabilities for data intelligence and exploration of its logistics, supply chain and industrial systems, among others.
Its new workplace platform, based on Google Workspace, prioritizes productivity and integration of people working at different sites, including remote points, to ensure connectivity anywhere.
This is one phase of a full digital strategy fueling uisa’s sustainable growth to become the leading biorefinery in Latin America.
“Our main objective is to accelerate the generation of business results for uisa through experience, distinguished consulting team and delivery excellence,” said Daniela Calaes, Head of SAP practice at Atos South America.
