Atos and Intel announce multiyear collaboration toward exaclass HPC and AI solutions

Collaboration builds on long-standing partnership to further accelerate scientific and business innovation

SC’19 – Denver, Colorado, November 18, 2019,

Atos, a global leader in digital transformation, and Intel today announced a multiyear collaboration focused on delivering the next generation of exaclass systems for High Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Atos is the leading European system provider of TOP500 supercomputers and is continuously developing solutions to address the needs of the world’s fastest supercomputers.

To continue to bring world-class systems to the market, which provide its clients with the computing power needed to enable AI-augmented HPC simulations and tackle previously impossible design, engineering, and scientific challenges, Atos will incorporate into its core platform offering future Intel Xeon® Scalable processors and Intel Xe-based GPUs optimized for HPC and AI workloads, along with Intel’s oneAPI unified programming model.

“The growth of artificial intelligence capabilities, data volumes and computing power in recent years will make AI an integral part of almost every HPC system. Intel today delivers the only datacenter CPU with built-in AI acceleration while enabling a shift in memory-storage paradigm with Intel Optane DC Persistent memory. Going forward, the Intel Xe architecture-based GPUs optimized for HPC and AI, along with Intel’s oneAPI, will further accelerate the convergence,” said Trish Damkroger, Vice President and general manager of the Extreme Computing Group at Intel.

“As we broaden our product portfolio for AI, customers require an infrastructure that can support the convergence of typical HPC applications and AI workloads. The combination of Xeon processors, Xe – based GPUs, oneAPI – as well as the Intel optimized frameworks such as Tensorflow federated in our BullSequana X supercomputer architecture – will provide Atos with a cohesive Intel based architecture for the convergence of HPC and AI” says Arnaud Bertrand, Senior Vice President, Global Head of BDS Strategy, Innovation and R&D at Atos.

The collaboration plans to focus on these areas:

  • Exascale-Class Computing

Intel and Atos will jointly develop innovative high-performance computing platforms combining their technologies including future Intel Xeon Scalable processor and Intel Xe-based GPUs. They will ensure these platforms support Intel compiler and software convergence technologies including OneAPI with Atos’s HPC software stack.

  • HPC Fabric

Atos will enhance its BXI interconnect with Intel technologies to meet the needs of hybrid exascale-class systems, which are able to connect traditional HPC infrastructure to Quantum based systems, AI dedicated components and Edge devices. It reinforces Atos’ Exascale strategy which is to support all the workloads in a unique BullSequana platform.

Meet the Atos and Intel experts at SC’19 from 18-21 November 2019 in Denver where Atos will exhibit the full range of its High Performance Computing offer on booth #1125.
