Madrileña Red de Gas and Atos reduce fraud in the distribution network with Atos Codex

The solution captures information from the enterprise systems and analyzes it combining data from other sources through a set of mathematical models of machine learning, providing improved predictions of supply points that have non-technical losses.

Madrid, 15 October 2016

Madrileña Red de Gas and Atos have managed to double the rates of success in the fight against fraud in the consumption of gas distribution network of the company, reducing energy losses, both derived from fraudulent consumption and network losses. In addition, the project has enabled Madrileña Red de Gas deepen the knowledge of its gas distribution network, identifying strengths and areas for improvement that allow to optimize its Income Protection strategy and improve processes and procedures.

Atox Codex analytics

The project, which will be presented as a success story during the European Utility Week that takes place in Barcelona 15-17 November (a demo of the new Welcome camera will be shown at the Atos stand #3D.119.) uses Atos Codex analytics, a comprehensive non-technical loss management solution for gas and electricity companies. This solution, which operates in software-as-a-service (SaaS) mode, captures information from company systems, and analyzes it by combining data from other sources using a set of mathematical models of machine learning, facilitating improved predictions of Provided by non-technical losses. After conducting the relevant inspections, the results are analyzed as learning to improve the effectiveness of predictive models. The system allows the models to learn in the field, improving as more customers are incorporated, offering economies of scale that could rarely be obtained with individual use of these tools.

Protection revenue

The detection of non-technical losses has a strong impact on the business, however most energy companies do not use the advanced predictive analytical capabilities to protect their income. “There is a perception of complexity, – explains Carlos Recio, Head Atos Worldgrid Spain at Atos– which Atos Codex solves.” The detection of non-technical losses requires information from a fairly broad set of internal data to the organization and also information on assets and their topology and field operations. A set of data to which external information must be incorporated into the organization to help improve predictive models, such as meteorological data, demographic data or business activity. With all this information, processed and analyzed, are developed the predictive models whose complexity often surpasses the capacities of the Companies.

This complex scenario, – says Recio- explains the relative low success rate in the inspections being carried out, which also generate an additional cost, which rarely exceeds 5%.” Up to now, inspections to identify energy thefts, in most cases, were random or, at best, applied some simple logic to try to improve the detection ratios that ranged between 2% and 7%, so That its profitability was often questioned.

This situation has changed and thanks to solutions like Atos Codex, the detection of these non-technical losses is affordable and profitable for Energy Distribution Companies. “Using our ability to manage large volumes of data, interpret and parameterize them, the success rates are between 30 and 40 percent, -says Carlos Recio- which allows our customers to quickly recover income in cases of fraud or errors in the counters, with a term of return of the investment of less than one year“.
