“Further expansion in the Netherlands of Bull supercomputer in 2016”

SURFsara will expand the capacity of the Cartesius national supercomputer in the second half of 2016. The contract with the supplier, Atos, an international leader in digital services, was signed in December. The models that researchers are working on are becoming increasingly complex and the data sets ever larger, hence they need more computing power.

The supercomputer at SURFsara – designed by Bull, the Atos brand for technological products and software – is used for scientific research by universities, research institutions and, to a limited but growing extent, by business. Cartesius is used, among other things, for climate research, water management, improving medical treatment, research into clean energy, noise reduction and product and process optimisation.

Prof. dr. ir. Anwar Osseyran, CEO of SURFsara indicated: “ When it acquired the system, SURFsara opted for an on-demand strategy. This means that we can offer cost-effective computing power tailored to the needs of Dutch researchers, and they always have the very latest technology at their fingertips.”

Technology

Cartesius will be equipped with the new Bull sequana technology. In addition, the supercomputer will have the latest Intel processors (Broadwell) and InfiniBand Enhanced Data Rate (EDR). The speed of the computer will therefore be increased by 260 Tflops to a total of 1.8 Pflops. The advantage of this new type of node is that the system becomes future-proof and can be expanded with the latest technology in the field of processors, accelerators and interconnects.

Roel Kusters, Head of Big Data & Security in Benelux & The Nordics at Atos, is proud of the cooperation with SURFsara : “ SURFsara has a lot of confidence in our technology and in its cooperation with Atos. This project is part of our Exascale programme for 2020, under which we are developing a new generation of supercomputers. In terms of computing power, these supercomputers should break through the Exaflop Barrier with more than a quintillion operations per second and, at the same time, consume a lot less electricity.”

The Cartesius national supercomputer is made possible by SURF, with the contribution of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
