“Atos IT Challenge kicks off its hunt for the best app to manage personal data”

Paris, 21 October, 2015

Students worldwide will work on this year's theme – the “Right to be Forgotten”- and develop the best technology to manage & protect our personal data on-line

Atos, an international leader in digital services, opens registration for its IT Challenge – the first international student technology competition now in its fifth year.

This year's theme invites students to tackle one of the biggest conundrums of the 21st century - how to manage our own personal data on-line, so that we can benefit from all that the digital world offers, while protecting our privacy and importantly our Right to be Forgotten. Under certain conditions, the Right to be Forgotten gives individuals the right to request to have their data completely deleted by an information society service provider.

The new digital age brings both opportunities and risks. The launch of the Single Digital Market by the EU in May this year seeking to contribute €415 billion per year to the economy and create hundreds of thousands of new jobs represents a positive step forward for consumers, businesses and governments.

Meanwhile the increase in cyber-attacks and the growing risk of data loss together with the close scrutiny of current regulations, such as “Safe Harbour”, which has recently been declared invalid by the EU, present reasons for caution. In this new digital environment, it has never been more crucial for individuals to take control and manage their own personal data on-line.

Gilles Grapinet, Senior Executive Vice President, Global Functions at Atos, said:

“Our digital identities are at the heart of a new major security concern as societies embrace digital transformation. This is why in the 2016 Atos IT Challenge we are asking students around the world to find ways that technology can help us better protect our personal data online including - under the relevant conditions - our right to be forgotten.

The Atos IT Challenge provides an excellent opportunity for students to turn their ideas into proofs of concepts and ultimately bring them to market and we are excited to see how they will use their knowledge and experience to create applications that help individuals better manage their online personal data.”

For the first time the winner and runners up will receive cash prizes - €10,000, €5,000 and €3,000 respectively - to help bring their app to market, along with gaining support from numerous Atos top executives.

The rules

In the first phase starting today until 30 November 2015, students will be asked to present the technology and architecture they are going to use to explain how they will develop it in the second phase.

A jury made up of members of the Atos Scientific Community - a global network of around 100 of the best business technologists within Atos – will select a shortlist of 15 teams.

The shortlisted teams will be announced in December and will be invited to work on phase 2 – the app development.

In May 2016, the 15 teams will present their finished apps with the finalists being invited to an Awards Ceremony in June, where the winner and two runners up will be announced.

The competition is open to students worldwide and they should enter as teams of between two and four members.

All participants in the IT Challenge will be invited to apply for an internship to work as part of the Atos organization.

The concept

The IT Challenge forms part of the Atos Wellbeing@work initiative and supports its objective to encourage and develop talent.  It was set up in 2012 to foster and encourage innovation in the future generation of IT professionals.

It is now an established event in the student calendar at our partner universities.

Past editions

The IT Challenge has uncovered winning ideas for the Olympic Games, connected cars and connected living. These include an app that suggests the best speed for phased traffic lights to reduce car emissions, an app to plan your day of sport and sightseeing during the Olympics and an app to find a seat on a crowded train.
