Outcomes
- 53% reduction in backlog, with further improvements underway
- 76% less area review time
- Significant cost avoidance and efficiency gains
Client Challenge
Challenges posed by traditional review methods
National Grid needed to ensure the UK’s electricity infrastructure could meet future net-zero demands. Traditional manual modeling methods had created a backlog that would take ten years to complete. As a result, crucial data was outdated before it could translate into strategic decisions. This lengthy process hindered proactive infrastructure planning and slowed response to emerging energy demands.
Solution
Triton – the digital twin solution for precise infrastructure planning
Partnering closely with National Grid, Atos developed Triton, a pioneering digital twin and data visualization tool. Delivered in just six months, Triton digitally visualizes network designs and models current and future power flows, significantly accelerating decision-making. With Triton Phase 2 underway, additional features such as automated schematics, enhanced data handling for real-time updates, and advanced scenario-based demand modelling are enabling even faster, more precise planning.
Business Benefits
A future-ready business: Net-zero and beyond
With Triton in place, National Grid has dramatically accelerated its ability to plan and deliver critical infrastructure. Backlog completion time has been reduced by more than half from ten years down to less than five, with further reductions expected to bring this to just three years.
Area reviews that once took six months can now be completed in little over a month, enabling far more agile responses to emerging energy demands. By eliminating the need for around thirty additional personnel, Triton has also delivered substantial cost avoidance, while secure, real-time data consolidation ensures far greater accuracy and reliability.
Most importantly, the platform enables concurrent working across teams and directly supports faster project delivery. In turn, this is fueling National Grid’s net-zero targets and advancing the UK’s decarbonization goals.
Why Atos
Atos is a trusted digital partner to critical national infrastructure, helping organizations like National Grid harness the power of data and digital twins to accelerate infrastructure delivery and drive the UK’s net-zero transition.
