Client Challenge
Sustainability is a key focus for manufacturing companies, but measuring an organization’s environmental impact is not always easy. In the UK, CPI is an independent technology innovation center dedicated to bringing new ideas to market. CPI operates the Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre, which brings together academics, healthcare companies, regulators and industry leaders to address some of the biggest sustainability challenges in medicine manufacturing and improve their sustainability credentials.
The building itself is a state-of-the-art facility with sustainable features integrated into its design. This includes a district heating network, photovoltaic panels and an intelligent cleanroom control system. Still, CPI needed a detailed and accurate view of its energy mix across the facility to ensure the center could continuously reduce its carbon footprint.
Solution
As the Medicine Manufacturing Innovation Centre’s digital partner, Atos designed an intuitive sustainability dashboard to offer a comprehensive view of the building’s energy utilization.
The dashboard presents a detailed breakdown of Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions at multiple levels, including building-level, floor-level and even for individual assets. With building floor plans illustrating energy distribution per room and integrated Power BI data visualization, users can access granular information that is fully customizable to meet the organization’s needs.
At the MMIC there are four clean rooms and a quality assurance lab, used to test new manufacturing processes and improve the delivery of existing and new therapies. The environment allows industry partners to innovate, co-develop and prove new techniques and technologies in a regulated environment. Having a clearer understanding of its energy mix means CPI can optimize production schedules to maximize green power utilization and reduce carbon emissions.
Business Benefits
Carrying out the most energy-intensive manufacturing processes when green power is available has the potential to reduce emissions by up to 50%. What’s more, the dashboard can predict green power availability for the next two days and store extensive historical data, enabling CPI to make informed business decisions on scheduling processes in the future.
This cloud-based solution leverages the latest open-source technologies for maximum scalability and can be extended to include carbon tagging and Scope 3 emissions. The sustainability dashboard was also built on CPI’s existing digital infrastructure to optimize its existing IT investments.
