Atos awarded by the European Union for the energy efficiency of its data centers in the UK and Germany
London, UK and München, Germany – September 6, 2023
Atos today announced that it has received an award in the Corporate Participant Category from the European Union for the energy efficiency of its Longbridge and Birmingham data centers in the UK and Fürth data center in Germany.
As the only company to be nominated for two countries by the EU Data Centers Energy Efficiency Code of Conduct Annual Award 2023, Atos has been recognized for having exceeded expected requirements in terms of very good implementation of the Best Practices with associated low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). This was achieved through the implementation of the latest energy efficient technologies such as White Space Cooling Optimization utilizing Artificial Intelligence, Cold Aisle Containment, Hardware Airflow Optimization, Free Cooling, the latest modern efficient Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSs), LED Lighting (which is further dimmed, and motion activated) and utilizing Waste Heat Recovery for Office Space Heating.
This award is testament to the commitment of Atos to the most demanding 1.5ºC Science-based Target and to net-zero greenhouse gases emissions by 2039 at latest, a date which is 11 years ahead of the ambitious aim of the UN Paris Agreement on Climate Change to limit the global warming of the planet to 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels. This reflects Atos commitment to energy efficiency and to reduce consumption of its data centers through the implementation of innovative technology and investment in highly skilled people.
In 2022, Atos achieved new milestones in reducing its energy consumption, both for its data centers and offices. In 2022, the ongoing action plans resulted in a drop of -8% in energy consumption (-32% since 2019).
“This recognition from the EU Data Centers Energy Efficiency Code of Conduct Annual Award reflects that Atos has been pioneering in digital sustainability for many years and reflects our continued commitment to the application of the latest technological innovations to enable our customers, employees, and members of societies at large to live, work and develop sustainably”, explains Laurent Barbet, COO Tech Foundations and Head of Hybrid Cloud & Infrastructure, Atos.
The Award Ceremony took place on Monday September 4, as part of the conference Platform Global 2023, the annual global conversation for investment and expansion in data centers, digital infrastructure, power, sustainability & ESG, organized in Antibes, France, from September 3 to 5. Atos has been a member of the European Code of Conduct on Data Center Energy Efficiency since 2018.
The European Code of Conduct for Data Centers (EU DC CoC), now joined by 500 data centers, is a voluntary initiative set up by the Joint Research Center (JRC) in response to the increasing energy consumption in data centers and the subsequent environmental, economic and energy supply security impact. It encourages and guides data center operators and owners in cost-effectively reducing energy consumption without compromising the mission-critical function of these facilities.
EU DC CoC sets ambitious voluntary standards as outlined in the Best Practices document. Revised annually, this document includes the latest technological developments to be implemented. A further document, the Assessment Framework, provides auditors with the necessary tools to assess if data centers apply the Practices correctly. It allows market players to complete their disclosures for Taxonomy alignment as part of their non-financial reporting without any ambiguity.
