Disability Inclusion
Atos worked with Equivalent SVG to create this example of a SmartSVG infographic that explains our ESG approach to Accessibility.
Equivalent have developed Smart SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) technology that enables graphics and illustrations including complex infographics to be created using SVGs. They adapt to dark mode or accessible colour schemes that are frequently used by people with visual impairments or colour sensitivities on their device or in their browser settings.
These smart SVGs also support screen readers and keyboard navigation around an infographic as you can select individual elements of the graphic. The end result is much more accessible than an image with a simple image description which is not scalable or navigable.
People aware of accessibility requirements often shy away from creating infographics because they are considered to be hard to make accessible, but this new technology gives us the opportunity to make infographics that work for a much wider range of needs. It also offers great customization and flexibility that supports multiple different types of screens.
In addition, smart SVGs are also much more environmentally friendly than traditional graphics because they are actually made of code, meaning that one infographic can scale and change shape and colour to fit different screen preferences and colour preferences. This saves a large amount in terms of multiple files and file sizes, which in turn reduces energy usage — so once again we have hit all three of the ESG criteria.
