IoT & Edge technology trends and insights

Posted on: September 3, 2019 by Luiz Domingos

The Internet of Things (IoT) is now all around us, reaching an estimated 35 billion of connected objects in 2021. And it continues to spread with an exploding number of devices interconnected via diverse infrastructures and platforms.

But besides offering huge opportunities to gain a competitive edge, IoT also comes with significant challenges: from cybersecurity and computing capabilities to sustainability.

Recently Atos CEO, Thierry Breton blogged about the post-cloud era that “the explosion of the Internet of Things will redefine the way data is created and processed – so much so that, by 2025, 80% of our data will actually be processed outside of the cloud and data centers, compared to 20% today. Where will it go? To the Edge !”

Solution architectures must then evolve to handle scalability, ensure security, and the need to decentralize data processing intelligence toward the edge of the network.

Next week, I will be joining hundreds of other Atos technology experts at our yearly Expert Convention in Madrid and will have the privilege to animate a panel on IoT & Edge.

This technology focused round-table including key Atos experts, partners and start-ups intends to offer insights and examples as well as address distinct views on: solution and network architectures, the Edge vs Cloud, connectivity challenges and security implications.

The panel gives us the opportunity to explore:

  • How these architectures will evolve;
  • How the cloud versus edge conflict will settle;
  • How artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity will play a role in the Edge vs Cloud;
  • and which architectures and supporting technologies will emerge or seize the market in the next five years.

Stay tuned with my next article where I’ll share with you the main insights from this panel!
