“Atos signs major smart metering contract in Austria with Salzburg AG”

Atos, an international leader in digital services, has been selected by Salzburg AG, one of the main energy and infrastructure service providers in Austria, as its lead partner to manage the complex transition of 470.000 electricity meters to smart meters and monitor the needed infrastructure. An international team comprised of Atos and Atos Worldgrid consultants from four countries are currently working on the transition. The smart meters will be installed by the end of 2019 in accordance with EU Directive 2020 and will serve 100% of consumers in Salzburg.

At Salzburg AG, the program on the implementation of the smart metering system consists of a total of 17 individual projects, to which Atos and Atos Worldgrid experts from Italy, France, Germany and Austria will contribute their experience and their know-how from the smart energy field in 13 projects to guarantee a smooth transition. The new measurement systems offer numerous benefits: Smart meters help to save energy, as they provide customers with more control over their own electricity consumption. Smart meters allow for a more precise measurement of the consumed amount. The grid quality and services will also be significantly improved for final customers. Furthermore, individual electricity consumption can be accessed online by the corresponding customer.

Thomas Rieder, Smart Metering Programme Manager at Salzburg AG: "The implementation of the smart metering rollout provides all operators with major challenges. After an EU-wide tender process we chose Atos as our lead partner as they excelled in terms of expertise and experience. They have already gained valuable experience in the rollout process in Italy and France and we fully rely on them as our long-term partner in this complex transition”.

In the course of this major project, Atos is providing Salzburg AG with full customer care: Jerome de Parscau, CEO at Atos Worldgrid explains: "Atos Worldgrid is the European leader in the implementation of smart metering systems. As the only service provider we cover all requirements throughout the process, from transmission protocols and concentrators up to the central data management. We are proud to be working on this project to provide Salzburg AG with the right expertise to make this transition a success”.

The EU Energy Efficiency Directive stipulates that in every EU country at least 80 percent of consumers are equipped with smart metering systems by 2020. Austria has set an ambitious goal; about 95 percent of the existing facilities are to be converted to smart metering within five years.[1]
