“Atos and project partners complete R&D phase of CHIRON system for remote patient monitoring”

Madrid, December 18 2013

Completion of the development program and pilots opens the door to new applications which will enable health staff to track and monitor chronic patients remotely, outside of the healthcare environment

Atos, an international information technology services company, has played a significant role in the development of the CHIRON Project for patient monitoring both in hospitals and homes. The project, which has just finished, will provide doctors with tools to view and analyze physiological signs and medical images via the computer. CHIRON is seeking to increase the prevention of acute episodes, which would allow avoiding subsequent treatments.

The objective of the project is to design and develop a leading monitoring system that would guarantee interoperability between devices and services related to healthcare, and make it possible to store and manage patient data securely. Algorithms have been developed to analyze complex data from various sensor types measuring different clinical parameters, such as body temperature, physical activity, patient's position, or blood pressure, in any setting in which the patient is monitored outside of the hospital.

CHIRON consists of tools enabling to process physiological signs and real-time images using computer-assisted analysis. The system allows improving decision-making regarding clinical treatment.

Atos has coordinated the Spanish participation in CHIRON and was involved in the design and development of the support tool for clinical experts, the Medical Expert Support Tool. This application acts as the engine of the Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS), which is used to compare patterns of the patient information captured through sensors, and activates the warning systems in case of risk situations.

Furthermore, the company has worked on the creation of a simple user interface that enables doctors to view the status of patients, compile data and assess risks. Atos has contributed to the project with its experience in clinical standards, storage, security and data protection. In addition, it has participated in integration tasks, requirements capture for the test plan and system acceptance, and played an important role in activities related to the dissemination and exploitation of results.

The pilot phase that has just concluded was carried out at hospitals In Italy and the United Kingdom, where patients suffering from Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) were monitored. Up to a total of 71 different parameters were obtained from sensors and measurements taken by clinical staff. The data compiled will serve to detect new biomarkers and foster algorithms for early detection and risk calculation.

In the coming years, it is anticipated that the monitorization of patients via sensors will evolve significantly. This way, CHIRON represents a revolution in the area of preventive diagnostics, since it goes further than the simple measurement of physical parameters, such as temperature or pressure, and makes it possible to detect biomarkers of diseases or concentrations of other kinds of substances in the blood.

CHIRON project

The CHIRON project started in 2010 and has been carried out by an international consortium of 27 partners from eight European countries. It has received funding from the ARTEMIS program, the European Commission and the Spanish Department of Trade, Energy and Tourism.

The CHIRON Consortium is formed by 27 partners: Atos Spain, Barco, Elsag Datamat, FIMI, Ibermática, Intracom, Philips, Alma, Cardionetics, I+, ITS, Mobili, Mortara Rangoni Europe, Wlab, Zorg Germak, Universidad de Bologna, “La Sapienza” de Roma, Uni. De Trieste, Univ. De Tecnología y Economía de Budapest, Universidad de Southampton, CEIT, CIMNE, ESI-TECNALIA, ISI, Josef Stefan Institute, and Southampton Universities Hospitals NHS Trust.
