“Atos and its partners launch the final version of the ALERT software development project”

Madrid, 23 September 2013

ALERT improves the coordination among software developers, via a real time, personalized and contextualized notification system.

Atos, an international IT services company, has announced the launch of the final version of ALERT (Active support and reaL-time coordination based on Event pRocessing in FLOSS developmenT). ALERT is a system that aims to facilitate collaborative tools for development teams that support and centralize specific tasks related to development processes and allow concentrating for improving their response times. This project, launched in October 2010 and finalized in May 2013, has counted with the participation of nine partners and has been evaluated by the European Commission in its final version as “excellent”. Furthermore, it will be published as a success story because of the quality of the results achieved.

ALERT has been launched as Open Source, and can be downloaded from Github.com or directly from the project's website (www.alert-project.eu), where different methods for its installation are offered. Among them, there is a totally operative version of all ALERT components in a virtual machine.

ALERT aims at improving coordination, collaboration and bug resolution processes taking advantage from building a project knowledge base and creating an interactive environment in collaborative or distributed environments. Furthermore, the project will provide tools and methods that can help in solving specific problems for users, in the following ways:

  • ALERT can reduce significantly the amount of spent time by developers on solving issues, investigating and searching different sources for possible solutions with the automation & notification engine and data-collection sensors.
  • ALERT can provide analysis tools to stay on top of the project status and team's contribution.
  • And last, ALERT provides automated profile creation of expertise, skills and project contribution.

One of the main features of ALERT is that it enables creating an interactive environment among developers by pushing mechanisms. The system works in the background collecting information from multiple information data-sources; it analyzes this vast amount of information searching for relevant events for developers and projects; at the same time it also annotates and saves meta-data creating a Project Knowledge-Base; and when it finds something relevant, it informs developers pushing them very customized and context aware notifications in real-time.

The compilation of information from different sources is performed via a system of sensors that are installed in such sources, to analyse afterwards the collected information.

Clara Pezuela, Head of IT sector from the R&I Group at Atos, said: “We expect to incorporate ALERT system as a complementary tool in our software development process to facilitate collaboration and communication in our teams, especially when they are geographically dispersed. It would also improve the monitoring of projects' status by using the visualization and statistical tools provided by ALERT”.

The project ALERT has counted with the participation of nine partners from the research, scientific, academic and industrial sectors (Forschungszentrum Informatik, Atos, KDE Open Source Community, Linagora, CIM Group, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, Institut Josef Stefan, Greeke Institute of Communication and Computer System y Corvinno Technology Transfer Center). ALERT was coordinated by FZI, and ATOS has been the administrative coordination responsible and leader of Exploitation and dissemination tasks.
