“Atos completes delivery of key IT systems for London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games”

London - 14 September, 2012

Atos business technologists enhance London 2012 Paralympic Games coverage with revolutionary online video player

Atos, an international Information Technology (IT) services company and Worldwide IT Partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, today announced, together with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), that its team of business technologists have successfully delivered the core systems that enabled more than 10.7 million ticket holders and billions of people around the world to witness the London 2012 Games.

London 2012 has been the most digitally enabled Olympic and Paralympic Games in history, with more people than ever tuning in to watch the events on more devices than ever before. It was the first Olympic Games in history to stream every single minute of the action live. It was also the first time ever at the Summer Games that all 26 Olympic sports, and five Paralympic sports, were added to the Commentator Information System.

For the Paralympics, Atos provided a groundbreaking new video player on the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) website, to integrate live video streaming and results within one single unified platform. It forms part of the IPC's broadcast strategy to increase viewing opportunities and showcase the sporting excellence of the 4,250 Paralympic athletes at London 2012.

Another first for the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games was the introduction of myInfo+. An internet application that enabled media could personalise on their laptops, so they only receive the information they need on the Games, whether it be biographies and competition schedules for certain athletes, the medal table or the latest news on transport.

Patrick Adiba, CEO Iberia, Major Events and Olympic Games at Atos, said: “As lead integrator, project manager and operations manager, we were responsible for the key IT systems for the Games and I am delighted to say that our team delivered. We are proud of the role we have played in what has been a resounding success for the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), LOCOG and the entire Olympic and Paralympic family.”

“Our business technologists have implemented and operated numerous innovative systems in to contribute to the delivery of the most digitally enabled Games of all time. People have followed the action from these Games on their TVs, mobile devices, social media and the internet.”

The Atos team of hundreds of business technologists have been working behind-the-scenes under the direction of the London 2012 Technology, and alongside the other London 2012 technology partners, to ensure the seamless delivery of information from the Games. It was the largest and most sophisticated sports IT project of all time, with the team setting a range of new benchmarks for future Games, including:

  • Providing the IT systems that processed and activated more than 300,000 accreditations for the Olympic and Paralympic family
  • Supporting 35 Olympic competition venues and 21 Paralympic competition venues with complete IT infrastructure to ensure the events could take place as scheduled
  • Processing more than 30 percent more competition data than ever before for media and news agencies worldwide
  • Sending real-time results and data from all 26 Olympic and five Paralympic sports to worldwide broadcasters. This was delivered via Atos' Commentator Information System
  • Providing competition, schedule, weather, transport and other essential information to all 18,900 athletes – delivered via the Atos Info+ and myInfo+ systems
  • Enabling up to 900 stories to be published in English by the Olympic News Service every day

Seb Coe, Chairman of London 2012, said: The technology for London 2012 has been invisible yet critical to the success of the Games. Our teams, alongside Atos and our other partners have worked together to make sure that when it came to technology, for the athletes it simply wasn't a consideration.”

Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, said: “With the support of Atos, the London 2012 Olympic Games IT system was successfully designed, built and operated so that the competition results could be viewed and read by more people than ever before.”

“Atos is the brains behind the operations for the Olympic Games, consistently delivering on schedule and within budget. The IOC look forward to working with Atos as we look ahead to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games and Rio 2016 Olympic Games.”

Sir Philip Craven, President, International Paralympic Committee, said: “There is no doubt that the expertise of Atos business technologists had a positive impact on the success of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
