“ING and Atos Origin extend partnership for iDEAL transactional services”

Utrecht, 14 March 2011

ING and Atos Origin, an international IT services company and leader in hi-tech transactional services, extend their partnership in iDEAL transactional services. ING shall use the platform from Atos Worldline, which brings together Atos Origin core expertise in hi-tech transactional services to support transactions through the electronic payment standard iDEAL until at least the end of 2014. Atos Origin has been providing ING with similar services since 2005. As a result of the agreement it will continue to be responsible for offering iDEAL transactional services and will contribute to making payments suitable for iDEAL between European countries.

"Atos Origin is well established in the financial sector and over the years it has proven itself to be a reliable partner for the management of the platform which supports iDEAL payments", says ING's Ad van der Poel, Head of E-Business. "This new agreement reinforces this collaboration. We have every reason to believe that Atos Origin is capable of handling iDEAL's growth acceleration, which in turn will enable us to meet SEPA's requirements."

"This new agreement demonstrates the confidence which ING has in our service. The financial market is rapidly changing. Financial transactions carried out online or by mobile phone have become the norm. The emergence of electronic payment cards also greatly contributes to payment dynamics", claims Rob Pols, CEO of Atos Origin Nederland. "Using our extensive experience and expertise in hi-tech transactional services, we will enable ING to meet SEPA requirements without having to adjust their IT systems themselves, hereby ensuring that money transfers become much easier and more transparent - one of the SEPA terms outlined by the European Commission.

Since its launch in 2005, iDEAL has demonstrated impressive growth. It has become one of the most successful online payment solution in Europe, compared with payment systems such as German Giropay and Austrian eps which are still far behind. ING - who along with other market operators is one of the greatest driving forces behind iDEAL - enables businesses, and online shops in particular, to process iDEAL transactions through iDEAL Basic and iDEAL Advanced. Via their personal page "My ING" on the home banking website, consumers can pay for online purchases in a secure and simple manner. The consumer will authorise an iDEAL transaction using the same procedures which customers are already familiar with when processing other financial transactions.

Now that European markets are becoming more and more integrated due to SEPA - Single Euro Payments Area - the need for iDEAL to meet SEPA guidelines is high on the agenda. As soon as iDEAL meets these guidelines, the system will also be able to support payments between different countries, as from 2012. SEPA must become a harmonised European payment area with cheaper and more efficient payment methods. This is the foundation for an integrated European payment market.
