“Atos Origin joins Transgreen: an industry initiative to run electricity networks beneath the Mediterranean”

Paris, 5th July 2010

Partners commit to the master plan to install a trans-Mediterranean grid capable of carrying up to 5 GW of renewable energy Thierry Breton, Chief Executive Officer of Atos Origin, international, IT services company and pioneer of intelligent energy management, this morning, in the presence of Jean-Louis Borloo, Minister of State for Ecology, Sustainable Development and the Sea, and Henri Guaino, Special Adviser to the President of the Republic, signed the draft agreement aimed at creating the Transgreen consortium, together with 12 other partners. This industry initiative plans to examine the feasibility of running an electricity grid between the two shores of the Mediterranean and developing connections around the Mediterranean basin.

Transgreen is part of the Mediterranean Solar Plan, which aims to build renewable, particularly solar electricity production facilities on the south and east of the basin, with a capacity of 20 Gigawatts by 2020. Atos Origin has joined this ambitious co-development project along with Abengoa, l'Agence Française de Développement, Alstom, Areva, CDC Infrastructure, EDF, Nexans, Prysmian, RED Eléctrica de España, RTE, Siemens and Taqa Arabia.

Thierry Breton said, “I am very pleased about the Transgreen initiative which is at the heart of our own strategy of intelligent energy management. This trans-Mediterranean energy highway project is a response to the major challenges shared by the countries on the two shores: energy efficiency and development of renewable energies and controlling and meeting the demand for energy in a sustainable way”.

Atos Origin is positioned resolutely at the centre of information technology for new intelligent electricity grids or “Smart Grids” from the production, transport and distribution through to the marketing and management of energy. Atos Origin will bring to Transgreen its key skills, long years of experience and wealth of references.

Atos Origin developed, deployed and keeps operational the National Operating System (Système National de Conduite – “SNC”) which supervises the French RTE very high voltage electricity grid (400 KV and 225 KV). Atos Origin is also very active in the Smart Grids Distribution sector.

Atos Origin is also head of the Consortium involved in the European Smart Grid OPENNODE project and has submitted a dossier as part of the multilateral agreement on investment initiated by ADEME on Smart Grids, to the GREENLYS organization.

Transgreen will be able to benefit from Atos Origin's contributions to:

  1. technical feasibility studies of the trans-Mediterranean grid as a supplement to existing networks;
  2. collecting technical data on existing networks, statistical consumption data, statistical data on the performance of networks;
  3. the design of the transport structure operating system, especially regarding the management of a multi access point d.c. grid system;
  4. expertise in the management and control of large projects, including a critical part of the information technology and real time control and command.
