“Atos Origin facilitates one of the largest Olympic Winter Games volunteer drives”

Vancouver, BC, July 23, 2008

Over 51,000 applications from 100 countries received, supported and secured

Atos Origin, the Worldwide IT Partner of the Olympic Games, announced today that the information technology systems designed by the company for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are successfully facilitating one of the largest volunteer recruitment drive in the history of the Olympic Winter Games.

In the five months since the program was officially launched on February 12, 2008, more than 51,000 people from 100 countries around the world have applied to volunteer at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games on a system designed, implemented and supported by Atos Origin. The system remains operational and Vancouver 2010 is continuing to accept applications.

“The use of information technology is vital for the staging of the Games,” says Magnus Alvarsson, Chief Integrator Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Atos Origin. “The modern Olympic Games are a complex mix of technology, processes and people with the added pressure of knowing the whole world is watching. There is no room for error.”

Atos Origin creates and supports the volunteer application platform, which is accessible through http://www.vancouver2010.com/. The information collected through this platform is secured and made available to Vancouver 2010 when the volunteer interview process begins.

“Having Atos Origin as our Worldwide IT Partner provides a stable and reliable system required to support a successful volunteer drive,” says Dick Vollet, Vice President of Workforce Operations for the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC). “We have received a remarkable number of applications from people across Canada and around the world who are willing to volunteer for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games. The seamless online application designed and managed by Atos Origin greatly facilitates the massive data collection and processing.”

As the IT integrator, Atos Origin is responsible for the design, build and operation of a complex and secure IT infrastructure to run the Olympic Games. In addition, Atos Origin provides two main software applications: Games Management Systems (GMS) and Information Diffusion Systems (IDS).

  • GMS, to which the e-volunteering program belongs, include such key applications as accreditation, transportation, sport entries and qualification, staffing and volunteer management, etc.
  • IDS, operating during Games time, deliver real-time information to media, athletes, judges, coaches and the whole watching world.

All systems must be tested and secure from outside infiltration to ensure there is no disruption. They must also span the physical terrain of the 2010 Winter Games, from Vancouver to Whistler, and be delivered on time and within budget.

The success of Atos Origin's Olympic technology is attributed to its unparalleled Olympic Games experience and more than 200,000 hours of testing prior to deployment. It is expected that Atos Origin's system will incorporate 3000 computers, 600 servers and 700 network devices by Games time.

The Atos Origin contract with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is the largest sports-related IT contract covering: Salt Lake City in 2002 (operating as SchlumbergerSema); Athens in 2004; Torino in 2006; Beijing in 2008; Vancouver in 2010; and London in 2012. Atos Origin has primary responsibility for Information Technology, relating to IT consulting, systems integration, operations management, information security and software applications development for the Olympic Games.
