“Enterprise Content Management: CNES collaborative portal: one year after it went online, Atos Origin has met its aims and the CNES is already looking at future prospects!”

Paris, 30 September 2008

Atos Origin was commissioned by the CNES (France's government space agency) to support it in overhauling all its Intranet sites by implementing a unique collaboration and enterprise content management platform. After a year online and an average of 1,000 "unique hits" per day - meaning that nearly 42% of all staff use it on a daily basis - the portal is a genuine success and future developments are already being considered.

Built around the notion that people work more effectively with others if they can source the information that they want, the portal has become the mainstay of the CNES's multiservice contact policy. With 2,400 staff spread across its 3 centres in Evry, Toulouse and Kourou, as well as its main site in Paris, the CNES had a plethora of Intranet sites. The challenge was to structure the information available for all the centres, to provide staff with a preferred communications tool and to offer new means of communication while customizing the information available and making sure it remained future proof.

And Atos Origin took up that challenge, supporting the CNES with the implementation of Open Text's Livelink solution. The result is that CNES staff now have access to a document information system. A system that is structured through users - who themselves hold information - being increasingly involved in contributing to it. Fewer tools are now involved in the management of that information, and the users now have more autonomy in the way that they use it.

"In addition to the traffic generated by the portal - about which we are thrilled - more than 100 "Structure" communities (Departments, Sub-Departments, Services) and 25 "Business" group communities are listed in it. The CNES's Intranet sites are now managed in a much more coherent and rational way. They serve as a means of bringing staff together", says François-Xavier Boisserie, Human Resources project manager at the CNES.

"This project is part of a long-term initiative to support our staff. We chose Atos Origin because of its expertise in Open Text technologies and its ability to guide the CNES in its use of new technologies. These technologies have changed the ways in which our staff within the company work together - and they continue to do so, says Jean-Marc Djian, Director of Development for the Enterprise Content Management Solution at Atos Origin France.

Evidence of this is in the fact that the CNES is already thinking about new applications after the portal's first successful year. These new applications include the introduction of heritage recording (from the various documents filed in its communities), extending this information-sharing facility to its industry partners, as well as other organisations and suppliers involved in CNES projects, grouping information together by CNES themes, project documentation management and the development of new information-sharing functionality (Web 2.0 and Wiki-type social networks in particular).

And Jean-Marc Djian goes on to say: "As a global service operator, Atos Origin is one of the few companies to cover the whole range of services involved in Enterprise Content Management. These include consultancy and recommendations with respect to processes, best practice, tool selection and then solution implementation. With more than 1000 people dedicated to Enterprise Content Management in Europe and our involvement in the three core activities of the service (Consultancy, System Integration and information management), we are able to support our clients in these strategic projects."
