Atos Origin, the Worldwide Information Technology (IT) Partner of the International Olympic Committee, today announced the successful completion of its IT operations for the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games.
“Today the Olympic Games could not happen without the use of Information Technology, and Atos Origin has played a crucial role in the success of the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games. We are extremely pleased to have them as our partner” said Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee.
IOC Technology Director, Philippe Verveer, added, “In the last 17 days, Atos Origin has clearly demonstrated its tier-one capabilities in delivering, integrating and securely managing a mission critical IT infrastructure, almost three times greater than the Salt Lake City Winter Games. Atos Origin is fundamental to managing the complexity of the Games and transferring knowledge, process and people to the next.”
The Olympic Games IT team, led by the ATHENS 2004 Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and supported by Atos Origin, was responsible for the integration of all technology partners for the design, build, and operation of the critical IT infrastructure and systems that ensure the smooth and secure running of the Olympic Games and the immediate availability of results. In preparation for and during the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games, the IT team has:
- Delivered approximately 200,000 accreditation badges securely to the Olympic Family (Athletes, Media, National Olympic Committees, etc.)
- Provided and distributed real-time results to more than 8,000 rights holding broadcasters in under 0.3 seconds for 18 sports plus both ceremonies via its Commentator Information System (CIS)
- Sustained about 18 million queries for information on 2,500 INFO 2004 terminals
- Supplied around 3 million kilobytes in over 800,000 messages of direct data feeds to the official ATHENS 2004 website, 6 World News Press Agencies and 13 other data feed clients.
This Olympic Games IT performance concludes more than three years preparation, during which over 200,000 hours were dedicated to testing that involved all technology consortium members.
With the huge increase in cyber attacks and computer viruses, IT security was the top priority for this Olympic Games and it was in IT security that Atos Origin invested most heavily. The first measure the company took was to keep the Games network completely separate from the Internet. Secondly, the latest monitoring technology that filters and prioritizes incidents was implemented. The system, significantly improved from Salt Lake City, immediately notified Atos Origin's IT security team of any incidents, allowing the team to take immediate action to prevent unauthorized access.
“The success of the IT operations for the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games has only been possible with the excellent cooperation between the IOC, ATHENS 2004, the technology partners and ourselves,” said Bernard Bourigeaud, Chairman of the Management Board and Chief Executive Officer, Atos Origin. “I am delighted and extremely proud of the 3,400 strong IT team, comprising almost 2,300 volunteers, approximately 700 employees from partner companies, as well as 400 Atos Origin employees of 46 different nationalities, who have worked together as a team in order to ensure that the Games run smoothly.”
The Atos Origin Major Events team, headquartered in Barcelona since 1989, have already begun preparations for the first IT test events for the TORINO 2006 Olympic Winter Games and the preparation for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. Several Atos Origin team members today based in Athens will move to Torino and Beijing in September, the rest of the team will stay in Athens to manage the IT infrastructure and systems for the Paralympics Games which begin on 17th September.
Martin Canning of IDC highlighted in a recent report entitled Atos Origin's Olympic Experience Builds Brand Image and Benefits Enterprise Customers: “Taking on a project of this magnitude, complexity and visibility, with no room for error, requires a strong and confident integrator. Atos Origin has assumed responsibility for this project following its acquisition of Sema, and a huge amount of effort has gone in to getting it right, including a major testing programme in June covering a number of venues.”
