“Final technical rehearsal of Olympic Games successfully completed”

London, 20th July, 2004

Atos Origin, a leading international IT services company and Worldwide Partner for the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games, today announced that the final technical rehearsal has been successfully completed for the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games. The rehearsal tested IT systems, communication, sports, security, venue management and press operations to ensure the readiness of staff and technology and that the operational procedures are properly defined.

302 different crisis scenarios were tested during a one-week period including: information security issues, such as uncontrolled access to the IT systems and computer viruses; power outages; staff unable to turn up for work; equipment failure and sports events being rescheduled. A non-operational team set these scenarios and then monitored and evaluated the behaviour and reaction of the operating team. Tests were carried out simulating the busiest days of the Games by a 1000-strong team which included hundreds of volunteers, and was led by the ATHENS 2004 Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Atos Origin.

The rehearsal took place across 16 venues, including the Main Press Centre and the International Broadcasting Centre, and involved 25 sports. Representatives from the media and sports participated in the trial, using the Commentator Information System and INFO2004, as they would during Games-time.

“The preparation by ATHENS 2004 and Atos Origin for this second technical rehearsal was outstanding,” said Phillippe Verveer, technology director for the International Olympic Committee. “The technical rehearsals are critical in the preparations for the Games and we are delighted with how well the team performed, sometimes under extreme pressure.”

“The second technical rehearsal is the culmination of two and a half years of systems development and comprehensive integration testing,” said Claude Philipps, chief integrator for the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games. “The first technical rehearsal in April this year taught us some valuable lessons that really helped the team succeed in the second rehearsal. I am confident that we are now ready for the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games.”

Atos Origin's contract with the International Olympic Committee is the world's largest sports-related IT contract, covering the next three Olympic Games over four years: Athens in 2004, Turin in 2006 and Beijing in 2008. In these Games, Atos Origin has primary responsibility for information technology consulting, systems integration, operations management, IT security and software applications development. When the Games go live in Athens this summer, Atos Origin will have trained and will be managing a staff of 3400 IT professionals and volunteers, and overseeing all IT activities at the Technology Operations Center (TOC), primary and secondary data centers, and 61 competition and non-competition venues.
