“Atos Origin : Software Development Processes Sw-CMM (ML3) compliant Naples R&D Centre one of the European leaders”

Milan, 5 April 2004

Atos Origin, one of the leading international Information Technology service providers, has announced that its Software Development Centre in Naples has been recognised as compliant with Level 3 of the Software Capability Maturity Model (Sw-CMM v1.1).

Sw-CMM, devised by Watts Humphrey in the mid-1980s and subsequently managed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh (USA), represents the de facto standard for assessment and continuous improvement of software development processes. Sw-CMM enables assessment of the efficiency and effectiveness of "software practices" such as Project Management, Quality Assurance, Risk Management, Change Management, Project Tracking etc.

This is an important achievement, which places the Atos Origin facility in Naples in a select group of nearshore centres in Europe that can claim this much sought-after recognition. The Sw-CMM certification is part of a Software Process Improvement (SPI) programme that Atos Origin has been pursuing for some years with the aim of providing its customers with solutions, services and specialised personnel that stand out in the market for their high levels of excellence.

In line with this objective, 15 Project Managers at the Naples centre have also attained the title of Project Management Professional (PMP®) this year, awarded following a thorough selection process by the Project Management Institute (PMI), an non-profit organisation founded in 1969 in Philadelphia and a worldwide reference for training and research in the area of Project Management with some 100,000 members throughout the world.

"The Level 3 Sw-CMM certification attained by our R&D centre in Naples represents a fundamental step towards the continuous improvement of software development processes", commented Sauro Bolletta, Systems Integration Director, Atos Origin. "Among the main objectives are development cost reduction and the provision of "on time" and "on budget" solutions; the Software Process Improvement initiative, which was started here, will soon be extended to our other centres of expertise".

The Naples Centre, which currently has around 350 personnel, is specialised in the production and integration of VAS Systems (Value Added Systems), Billing, Online Services and Industrial Automation Systems in various market sectors in Italy, Greece, Turkey, North Africa and Latin America. Over the years, the Centre has, among other things, developed a high level of cooperation with local universities, in particular as regards the development of projects with a high level of technological innovation, to which CMM will bring significant added value in terms of maintaining the quality and efficiency of results.
