“Atos Origin helps Lee County Government in wake of hurricane damage”
Houston, August 19, 2004
Communications and data links for Lee County emergency operations center provide vital role for devastated communities
Atos Origin, a leading international information technology services provider, today announced it has been instrumental in providing first-line-of-support for communication links to Lee County Government Offices in the aftermath of Hurricane Charley, a category 4 hurricane that crossed Florida on Friday, August 13. Atos Origin was an essential element in keeping Lee County officials operational by maintaining computer network connections, data accessibility, data integrity and telephone services to support the community relief efforts.
Geographically, Lee County is adjacent to Charlotte County, the Florida county hardest hit by Hurricane Charley. With a reliable communication infrastructure in place, Lee County will provide an office for Mike Brown, Director of FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) in the Lee County Public Works Building, beginning August 16. Additionally, Lee County hosted Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson and Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge, on Tuesday, August 17, providing them with temporary offices, computers and phones in the Public Works Building.
Lee County worked with Atos Origin to initiate their preparedness program 72 hours prior to the storm coming ashore. The Lee County building sustaining the highest degree of damage from both wind and rain was the building out of which the Atos Origin team was working. Though key Lee County personnel worked throughout the weekend, the balance of more than 2,000 County employees returned to work on the first Wednesday following Friday's storm.
“In times of catastrophic disasters, government agencies provide a stabilizing element, helping bring order to the chaos caused by destruction. That is why the Atos Origin team remained focused on enabling County initiatives, in spite of the fact that each team member faced personal property losses,” stated Clinton Dean, program director, Atos Origin. “Because of their preparedness, Lee County is providing an office to FEMA's director who is helping those who have suffered even greater losses in Charlotte County.”
“There is a direct correlation between the efficiency of the networks, computers and phones and the effectiveness of the County's relief efforts. We are already able to issue emergency permits, and Lee county employees are returning to work earlier than I originally anticipated,” stated Jim Desjarlais, information technology manager, Lee County. “The Atos Origin team, including a Tiger Relief Team, has been putting the community first, dedicating long hours to stabilizing our infrastructure so we can respond quickly to those in need. You simply cannot put a price on peace of mind.”
