“KP1 calls on Atos Origin to improve its Computer-Assisted Design system”

Paris, 8 July 2004

A major player in the "heavy construction" market of the contruction sector, the French industrial group KP1 has hired Atos Origin to rework its Computer-Assisted Design System. One of the main aims of the new system is to favor deployment of the resource within the KP1 group by improving productivity and synergy among staff at the different sites.

In the framework of a reorganization according to trade, and with an eye to optimizing information management at its 33 locations in France and abroad, KP1 wished to upgrade its design system. Thus, the firm turned to Atos Origin to help meet its needs in regard to making information available and consistent in real time by reworking the existing system. KP1 and Atos Origin also worked together to improve the reliability and performance of software. The new system implemented will eventually be deployed at all French and international locations.

"We chose Atos Origin based on their determination to gain in-depth understanding of our requirements and to satisfy these requirements through a truly effective partnership. Atos Origin unfailingly met implementation deadlines: this project, begun on April 1st, 2003, was completed on time on 15 February 2004," explains Mr. Luc Bresse, Research and Development manager for KP1. "Since then, we have asked Atos Origin to handle other functional upgrades, due to be completed at the end of this year."

Atos Origin took on three projects simultaneously
Atos Origin mobilized up to 10 engineers, who were able to provide point-by-point solutions to the expectations of KP1 by setting up a specific system using new technologies. This translated into improved reliability and productivity gains. Finally, the architecture used facilitates access and deployment of the application in the workplace.
Atos Origin staff simultaneously took on the following projects:

  • Making a Web-based beam-creation simulation application: thin client in Java, Struts, and Apache Tomcat.
  • Migrating a computing core to a 32-bit architecture, without rewriting.
  • Designing beam-creation software (Java 3D fat client technology) for various KP1 production units.

Added value of chosen solutions
The added value brought by Atos Origin resided in their ability to combine rigorous project management, flexibility and innovation in proposed solutions. Some especially noteworthy points:

  • Assistance with defining requirements through early involvement of a consultant capable of gaining a thorough understanding of the client's trade and trade constraints.
  • The chosen architecture, implementing new technologies, reusing the existing computing core and adhering to the budget estimate.
  • Flexible project management, taking changes into account while staying within the initial budget envelope.

The availability and responsiveness of staff were also a key factor of success.
