“Atos Origin Completes Delivery of Transport Direct Portal – First Ever Multi-Modal Transport Portal”

Atos Origin, the largest European listed IT services company following the acquisition of SchlumbergerSema in January 2004, today announced that it has completed delivery of the first major phase of the Transport Direct Portal. This is one of the most comprehensive services of its kind providing travellers with easy-to-access travel information for the entire journey whether it be by train, bus, tube, tram or car.

Transport Direct is one of the 30 key services that the Government plans to offer on line by 2005, as part of its initiative to provide electronic delivery of public services. The Transport Direct portal will centralise journey planning and facilitate ticket purchase across the range of transport service providers and modes of travel. It will enable travellers to easily view their travel options, plan journeys, compare costs, predict journey times and keep up to date with real time travel conditions. The service is expected to be fully operational by spring 2004.

The transport industry will benefit by having access to the rich content of Transport Direct, which they can use to complement their own call centre and web site information. Furthermore, by providing joined-up information, it will also help with transport planning across different modes of transport and ultimately could help reduce congestion, roads maintenance costs, accidents and pollution by encouraging a more rational use of alternative means of transport.

"Leading the consortium, Atos Origin has met the tight time scales and delivered a solution that is flexible and capable of growing with the service," said Nick Illsley, chief executive, Transport Direct. "I truly believe that the influence of Transport Direct will extend beyond the portal itself and act as an agent for change to improve the coverage, quality and accuracy of travel information generally."

Under the three year contract worth £15 million, Atos Origin is responsible for overall project management including the design, build and managed service operation of the portal. Atkins is providing the journey planning software; BBC Technology designed the user front-end; ESRI (UK) is delivering the mapping software and solutions; RTEL is supplying air information solutions and Microsoft is providing the .Net framework.

Massimiliano Claps, analyst at IDC and author of the IDC study 'Transport Direct: the U.K. Department for Transport Centralizes Information for Travellers with SchlumbergerSema and Microsoft', commented, "the UK Department for Transport project is a good example for other public sector agencies of how an innovative management approach, rather unusual by government standards, some would argue, can contribute to the implementation of eGovernment solutions."

Further functional enhancements will follow as the system continues to evolve. Plans include the integration of information from additional travel service providers, such as airlines, new methods of journey planning such as search by price rather than speed, and new channels of access, for example, mobile devices.

1. The vision for Transport Direct is to provide a comprehensive, easy-to-use, multi-modal travel information and ticketing service for any journey within the United Kingdom.

2. Transport Direct was announced in Transport 2010 - The 10 Year Plan. Targets for 2003, as set out in the 10-year plan, are :
