“Atos Origin Supports RTE In Deployment of Electronic Document Management Solution”

To meet certification requirements and establish a comprehensive, highly effective document base, the Transmission Branch of France's Réseau de Transport d'Electricité (RTE) has deployed an electronic document management solution using Documentum software, with support from Atos Origin.

A large-scale project

Accessible to all agents via the RTE intranet, the document base was configured in-house by Centre National d'Ingénierie de l'Information (CN2I) and deployed across France unit by unit throughout 2003. Extensive preparatory work was required to get the existing base of more than 17,000 documents ready for the new system.


Numerous internal and external resources were leveraged to carry out this large-scale project. Among them, Atos Origin was selected to design a change-support program in compliance with RTE's specifications. The program involved training and the production of accompanying literature.

Upstream preparation

Atos Origin's involvement began long before deployment, with training for the application's first QA testers in May 2002. Atos Origin began preparing training sessions for users concerned by the initial deployment phase in the three pilot units in December 2002. At the same time, exhaustive support literature was drafted for distribution to users in training and to accompany the electronic document management software.


The project was deployed in 2003 after the application's configuration was fine-tuned for users. Training sessions were held throughout the year as needed, in keeping with the deployment schedule.


Deployment was carried out gradually according to specific timetables for the nine units involved in the project, which included the National Grid Expert Evaluation Center, seven Regional Electricity Transmission units and the Purchasing Department. The application concerned a highly diverse group of trainees and users, ranging from engineers and quality managers to process managers and administrators.

Customized training

The training program designed in partnership with RTE responded perfectly to the project's requirements and generally proceeded as planned. It included:


  • Four modules corresponding to different profiles in the units (users, super-users, document producers and document administrators). The modules varied in length from 105 minutes to two days.
  • Additional modules. The administrator course included the producer course, which itself included the super-user course-a flexible method that allowed trainees to attend several sessions without missing out on anything.
  • Real-time adaptation to changes in the application thanks to ongoing contacts with the project team and the CN2I development team.

Highly encouraging results

By the end of 2003, Atos Origin had trained some 650 people at ten sites. The trainee satisfaction rate was particularly encouraging, exceeding 85% in the following categories for all courses combined: objectives met, usefulness and skills acquired.

Réseau de Transport d'Electricité (RTE) operates France's high voltage and extra high voltage public power transmission system.
