“TDF Selects Atos Origin to Design and Build a New Supervision Platform for its Broadcasting Services”

Paris - February 17, 2004

The new platform will enable TDF to operate its most advanced broadcasting systems, in particular the future Digital Terrestrial Television system.

Télédiffusion de France (TDF), a major provider of image, sound and data broadcasting services, has selected Atos Origin to design and build a new supervision platform as part of a multi-phase program to replace its existing system, which is being upgraded to improve production processes and deliver new customer services. TDF wants to enhance the quality of service provided in connection with its new digital television and Autoroute FM radio broadcasting offers, and to rationalize management costs, in particular for operating and upgrading the system, optimizing equipment and ensuring the required technical performance.

Reasons for Selecting Atos Origin
"We selected Atos Origin because of its commitment to thoroughly understanding and meeting our requirements through a genuine, effective partnership," explains Philippe Hermann, TDF Operations and Maintenance Director.

The Solution
Atos Origin was selected to deliver design, development, support and maintenance services for the platform.
The solution proposed was designed to ensure optimum total cost of ownership (TCO) for TDF, leveraging Atos Origin's build and run expertise with extensive capability to design and build systems that operate at optimum cost. The highly modular and scalable technical architecture enables TDF to meet future upgrade requirements, while the selection of standard commercial components ensures the new system's long-term viability.

In particular, the solution adopts an iterative, participatory methodology that promotes strong TDF involvement in building its new system.

Added Value
The solution delivers added value through:

  • Reduction of costs for hardware and software (a PC-based infrastructure enabling more flexible deployment and cost-effective operation at the 200 locations concerned, with extensive use of Open Source software programs, such as Linux, JacOrb, Apache and PostgreSQL).
  • Control of technological risks, in particular with Atos Origin's volumetrics and performance commitments, thanks to the methodology employed.
  • Effective management of lead times, supported by an industrial-strength project organization and transparent risk management.
