“Atos Origin In £100 Million Pound Outsourcing Deal With Food Giant Brakes”

London / Ashford, 2 July 2003

Atos Origin, the €3 billion IT services company, has signed a £100 million outsourcing contract with Brakes, the UK's leading food service supplier. The contract, which runs for 10 years from 1 July 2003, sees Atos Origin take over all Brakes' UK information systems (IS). There will be no job losses as a result of this move. Around 80 IS staff will transfer to Atos Origin, which is developing a new site in Ashford, close to Brakes' headquarters, to house the team.

As part of the deal, Atos Origin will integrate all the business systems from each company in the Brakes Group onto SAP, replacing numerous legacy systems. This is expected to improve business efficiency by rationalising a previously diverse infrastructure, a result of the company's growth following the acquisition of a number of companies.

Atos Origin's track record in large SAP implementations was a key factor in its selection as Brakes' IT partner, according to Brakes' Group IS Director, Phil Goodwin. He also cited Atos Origin's ability to give advice on the new IS infrastructure, based on its experience in the food market, as well as the ability to design and operate a system that would suit Brakes' requirements.

"Our research into outsourcing demonstrated that there would be a number of benefits to Brakes, specifically the acceleration of our integration programme, enhancing our relationships with our customers and reducing our IT cost base. But when choosing a company to partner us it was important to find an organisation that understood our industry. Brakes is a customer focused organisation that is committed to delivering a first class service to its customers ensuring their needs and expectations are fully met.

"We rely on our information systems to ensure we can continue to provide this high level of service and react quickly to constant changes in the industry. Atos Origin understands our industry and our needs, and we believe it will be able to move our business forward whilst ensuring it will be 'business as usual' as far as our customers are concerned. Cultural fit was also very important to us. We wanted a partner that was committed to developing our staff and one that would stay in Ashford, close to our business."

Paul Bingham, UK Managing Director, Atos Origin, comments: "We have more experience in the food industry than any other major outsourcer operating in the UK, which means we can consult on, build and then operate business-efficient systems in this market. Not only is Brakes a great name to have on board but our new base in Ashford will help us to open up the south-east market and grow business in the region."

Atos Origin already has major outsourcing contracts in place with a number of leading food companies, including Uniq and United Biscuits, and is involved in providing ERP systems to 15 other food companies.
