“Atos Origin Chosen by AIRBUS to Produce Idefix A380 SCI Test Bench”

Paris - June 5, 2003

Atos Origin, a leading partner of AIRBUS, is producing the Idefix test bench that simulates the functions of the Secure Communication Interface (SCI) gateway linking the avionics network and the open network of the Airbus A380's onboard architecture.

The system and onboard network architecture of the Airbus A380 is separated into two "worlds": the avionics network, which includes such critical functions as flight control, navigation and the fly-by-wire system, and the open network, which includes non-critical functions like maintenance, access to flight documentation and passenger services.

The Secure Communication Interface (SCI) ensures the security and integrity of data received and transmitted between the two worlds via the ADFX network, a switched Ethernet-like avionics network based on a new standard developed for the A380, and the ARINC 429 databus, the current aeronautics standard. Built on an industrial PC architecture run by Linux, the Idefix technological solution will serve as a gateway for testing communication between the two networks' systems during the ground integration phase of the A380's architecture, while waiting for delivery of the real SCI equipment.

Atos Origin will produce approximately 40 Idefix systems for delivery to three sites in Europe: Toulouse (France), Filton (United Kingdom) and Hamburg (Germany).

For Atos Origin, the project represents a major contract for the design and production of test benches that strongly confirms the Company's position as a leading partner to the Airbus A380 project, in terms of both business volume and project diversity. Idefix also enhances Atos Origin's position as an expert in communication technologies and networks for aircraft and ground operating systems.

Atos Origin's specialized aeronautics and air control division in Toulouse has supported Airbus for many years on several high value-added technology projects:

  • The open network A380 Centralized Maintenance System (CMS).
  • The A380 FCGU, the primary computer in charge of electrical flight controls.
  • The A380 ATC and the A320/A340 ATSU systems, which manage air/ground communication between pilots and air control centers.
