“Equant Selects Atos Origin to Manage Business Applications”

Cost-management provisions included in the project contract

With the merger of Transpac, Global One and Equant, France Telecom has transformed its data transmission business to create a world-class operator. As part of a program to expand its information system, Equant has signed a multiyear applications management contract with Atos Origin to ensure the system's availability, operability and traceability and, most importantly, to control and optimize the cost of operating its applications. Atos Origin was chosen for the quality of its solution, its global reach and its skills in the field of consulting and data processing methodology.

Under the terms of the contract, Atos Origin will manage operation of the business applications for:

  • International billing
  • Marketing, sales and finance management.
  • Scheduling of maintenance operations.
  • Procurement and related functions.

Equant's goal is to use a working method based on guaranteed-results contracts instead of best-effort commitments. Better identification of costs, through the introduction of management tools and performance indicators, will enable Equant to improve the individual management of each application, optimize applications operation and provide system owners with detailed information for making decisions.

An Equant representative said: "We believe that introducing an approach based on operating costs for each application is crucial so we can control these costs more effectively and regularly review the return on investment. Equant and Atos Origin worked together to select the method used for this outsourcing project."

A service agreement was prepared to measure the quality of services delivered by Atos Origin, with two types of performance indicators:

  • Load indicators (number of events, number of job requests, etc.).
  • Quality indicators (application availability, response time, etc.).

The processes involved were analyzed and enhanced from the start-up phase with the ITIL system that Atos Origin applies to many data processing projects.

"This type of collaboration reflects a change in our clients' subcontracting methods, with the cost-cutting policies of large account purchasing departments requiring a different approach. Typically, we can manage data processing and work with the client to optimize and pool data processing operations while securing tangible productivity gains," said Xavier Puiseux, Head of IT Management at Atos Origin.

This approach to operations management offers the benefit of a service contract providing Atos Origin's guarantee to:

  • Implement the related organization, procedures and tools.
  • Supervise and manage data processing applications.
  • Provide daily and periodic reports.
  • Ensure full visibility of operating costs.
