“Atos Origin Previews Innovative Virtual-ID Multifunction Wallet Server Solution for Secure Internet Transactions at Cartes 2001”

Paris, France - October 22, 2001

Atos Origin is presenting its Virtual-ID multifunction wallet server at the 16th International Forum for Card Technologies and Secure Applications. Three demonstrations will highlight various features of this innovative solution:

Demonstration 1: The Virtual-ID multifunction wallet server is ideal for providing secure payment transactions via the Internet and remote terminals such as PCs, PDAs, GSM mobile phones and interactive television.

Demonstration 2: Atos Origin illustrates a Virtual-ID application for secure payment transactions using a smart card reader/certificate terminal. The application was developed in just one month with IT equipment manufacturer Xiring and Cyber-COMM, a subsidiary formed by ten of France's largest banks.

Demonstration 3: Virtual-ID also provides secure access to online banks.

One benefit of the Virtual-ID solution is that it can be used on any Internet e-commerce site without requiring banks, merchants and consumers to make substantial investments. This represents a decisive advantage, considering that several pilot projects have failed in the past because they were unable to reach critical mass due to deployment costs. Virtual-ID offers an innovative solution that ideally integrates the 3D Model promoted by major bank card networks for card-issuing financial institutions.

Virtual-ID is also very easy to use. When paying on an e-commerce site, a buyer opens his or her virtual wallet on the Internet. The Virtual-ID wallet application then automatically fills in the merchant's payment form and generates a unique transaction number, which is a virtual bank card number valid solely for that transaction. This number replaces and thus safeguards the integrity of the actual bank card number.

If payments are secured with a smart card reader/certificate terminal, a small device the size of a euro converter, the buyer's identity is verified when he or she inserts the bank card in the terminal and authenticates by entering a personal identification number. The buyer also enters an 8-character "challenge" assigned by Virtual-ID in the certificate terminal, to which the certificate terminal replies with a "response" that the buyer uses to complete the payment.

Using the Virtual-ID building blocks, Atos Origin can offer financial institutions a solution tailored to meet their specific identification and authentication requirements, ranging from a simple password to more sophisticated SSO (Single Sign On) solutions or the use of smart cards with various types of reader, pending the introduction of biometric identification systems in the future. In addition, Virtual-ID uses XML/XSL techniques that ensure multimedia compatibility with ergonomic interfaces that can be personalized for card-issuing financial institutions.

The future proliferation of virtual local area networks such as Bluetooth should further reduce information exchanges and only require the buyers to enter a personal identification number via the certificate terminal for authentication. The "challenge-response" exchange will then be supported by the virtual LAN.
