“Atos Origin Offers French Banks an Integrated Solution For Managing the Transition to the Euro And to Check Imaging Technology”
Paris, France - September 11, 2001
Atos Origin, a leading provider of payment and transaction management services in Europe, is actively involved in the development of bank check processing technology. Its Customer Management Services division offers French banks an integrated check digitization solution covering the entire chain, from reception and back-office processing to storage, and capable of responding to emerging client needs. France's leading banks have already entrusted Atos Origin to manage the arrival of euro bank notes and coins and the changeover to check-imaging technology.
"Several years ago, Atos Origin anticipated the investments that would be needed to manage large-scale digitization projects," says Christian Huguet, President of Atos Origin's Customer Management Services business in France. "Our 17 processing centers are now fully organized to collect, digitize, process and store checks. This business is a logical extension of our innovative Oasis digitized image processing solution, introduced a few years ago."
France's decision to introduce check imaging means that the bank of the remitter (e.g. the. merchant) will create and send an electronic image of the check, rather than the actual paper check, to the bank of the drawer (e.g. the customer) for payment, via the country's SIT electronic interbank settlement system. The remitter's bank is thus responsible for storing both the physical and electronic checks and for handling any eventual disagreements between the two parties. Given the importance of this responsibility, the bank needs to choose its information service providers very carefully.
Anticipating this major change well in advance, Atos Origin today offers clients an end-to-end document-processing solution that includes the capacity to store the roughly one billion customer checks processed every year. Both physical and virtual checks are stored as long as legally required. As part of the package, Atos Origin also delivers new back-office services, including unsettled account processing, document searches, and requests for originals and photocopies. Atos Origin is working in partnership with a large number of banks to develop these new services.
"Remitter banks are going to have to join with industrial partners," says Linda de Chammas Pardo, head of marketing at Atos Origin's Document Management Services. "This approach will also lead to the creation of new services. Atos Origin is now ready to manage the automation process."
"Bank check processing is in a major transition phase," she continues. "It is being transformed not only by check imaging but also by automatic document reading and automatic document management. With Atos Origin, banks are sure to work with a partner capable of delivering innovative solutions."
