“Baltimore Technologies and Atos Origin to enable e-Business security projects”
Paris, France, May 16th 2001
Combining their technological expertise to attain the highest level of security, Baltimore Technologies (symbol) and Atos Origin are working together to provide a Certificate Authority (CA) service. The objective is to enable all companies to exchange information electronically in a trusted and secure environment. This offer, marketed under the name of "MediaCert", is based on an ultra-secure technology concept (Baltimore PKI solutions combined with Atos Origin hosting in "secure bunker" locations) as well as an organisational concept offering services and consulting linked to the implementation of a certification policy.
At a time when European and national administrations are seeking to promote technologies for electronic commerce, in particular the publication on March 30th in France of an electronic signature decree, Atos Origin and Baltimore Technologies are working together to create the MediaCert offering: a certification service, which encompasses consulting, implementation, assistance, and operation of certification infrastructures. This solution is targeted at the entire market, in particular to banks and governmental organisations that have requirements for infrastructural hosting covering the European market.
Atos Origin and Baltimore Technologies
Atos Origin provides the most protected solution, currently existing in the French market. The group is already recognised for the quality of its secured data processing for European Banks and Stock Exchanges, including those in Paris and Amsterdam. Baltimore Technologies is the world leader based on its product expertise in the PKI field (public key infrastructures) and on the number of certificates issued on these platforms (more than 14 million).
This relationship unites two neutral companies that are able to provide an ongoing and reliable solution through their thorough knowledge of the constraints and the benefits offered by these new technologies.
Atos Origin and Baltimore Technologies: more than a technical operator or services integrator
"MediaCert" encompasses the entire life cycle of certificates: request, creation, revocation or renewal and archiving.
The offer also includes support of a personal smart card to protect users' individual keys.To supplement the offering, a hot line has been installed to assist companies in the use of their certificates and the management of their revocation.
Atos Origin supports each customer by providing counselling at all levels and in particular as regards the drafting of its Certification Policy or its security policy.
"By working together, we support the projects of our regular customers in terms of infrastructural hosting solutions. We also chose to position ourselves as the certifier for customers requesting this service. We will apply for approval to become a "qualified electronic certification technical operator". We therefore support our customers during this phase when innovative technology is being implemented by favouring the de facto standards of the market. As such, we assure reversibility by enabling our customers to re-establish their own operation of this service according to their own requirements," said Christian Huguet, President of the Customer Management Services activity of Atos Origin.
"The relationship between Atos Origin and Baltimore Technologies enables a single offering with significant added value. Thus we hope to address the French market in an overall and structured way by providing a response more tailored to its expectations. In the short run, both companies will work in each European market where we are present. Thus Atos Origin and Baltimore will enjoy an enviable position in the on-line trade value chain," said Patrick Jourdas, Baltimore Technologies' Director for Southern Europe and Benelux.
