“Marketplaces: Atos Origin Uses EJB™ Objects to Build Barterforum.com, Europe’s Leading B2B Reciprocal Trade Exchange”

Paris - France, March 30, 2001

Atos Origin has designed, built and now hosts on its multimedia platform the new www.barterforum.com exchange, Europe's leading B2B barter exchange.

For the past fifteen years, Barterforum has developed unique barter expertise in Europe, where it acts as an exchange for B2B barter transactions to facilitate reciprocal or multi-lateral trade. The exchange has now been migrated to the Internet. "Our experience in reciprocal trade is a valuable asset in delivering a credible online value proposition. We've developed a simple, yet efficient system that facilitates B2B trade", says Pierre Fontaine, Barterforum chairman and co-founder.

www.barterforum.com is a "neutral" marketplace, that offers members the unique ability to pay in a mixture of cash and kind. Companies of all sizes and in all industries can use the exchange to trade some of their unrealized assets (excess production capacity, for example, or inventory) or to purchase supplies without drawing down their cash. Barterforum serves as a clearing house, finding takers for products put up for trade, and then managing multi-lateral relations among members.

Atos Origin: Barterforum's technological partner

To design and build its exchange, Barterforum selected Atos Origin's Multimedia Division, which was capable of delivering an end-to-end solution, comprising upstream technical needs analysis, site design, development and integration, technical support and site hosting on its technology platform. In addition to designing the site, Atos Origin handled payment security, via the SSL protocol, and data security, via encryption in firewall-protected databases.

One of the first European marketplaces developed with EJB™

Building the exchange involved the design and development of original Enterprise JavaBean™ components to manage workflow, authentication and online transactions. One of the site's special features is a transaction engine capable of understanding the mixed cash/barter trading system. This required implementation of dedicated technical solutions meeting the security, reliability and performance specifications of a conventional transaction system.

Sized to process several hundred transactions at once, the marketplace enjoys the horizontal scalability needed to raise that limit in a very short time, without modifying the existing architecture.
