About this scheme

If you’re interested in leading the future of technology, there’s no better place to start than our Level 3 Software Development  Apprenticeship. The 12-18 month programmes combine classroom training with hands on experience, with modules designed to teach you both the technical and  business skills you need to thrive in a long-term career as a software  developer.

You’ll work on a diverse range of tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment, developing your knowledge of the digital sector and learning how to create world-class customer solutions. If you’re a methodical and creative problem solver, with the determination to take on real responsibility as you grow into the role, this scheme is for you.

What you’ll cover

All our Software Development apprentices are supported in achieving a Software Development Technician level 3 qualification, an equivalent to A levels / Scottish Highers.  From there you’ll have the option to specialise with further certifications, which could see you improving your Java programming skills or learning the fundamentals of C#.

The programme will give you everything you need to take on a role as a fully-fledged software developer.

Qualifications you’ll achieve as part of your Software  Development Apprenticeship*:

  • Software Development Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship
  • BCS Systems Development Essentials (England only)
  • BCS Level 3 Certificate in Software Development Context and Methodologies
  • BCS Level 3 Certificate in Programming

*qualifications in Scotland may vary

Entry requirements

For this scheme you’ll need 7 GCSEs / Scottish National 5’s or equivalent at grades 4-9 / A-C (including Maths and English), ideally including a qualification in ICT.

In this role, you’ll be working on business-critical applications that allow the UK rail industry to track trains across its network, process the information and pass it to train operators. The applications are written in a range of languages and technologies, so you will have plenty of opportunities to develop and apply your coding and testing skills across different practical challenges, including bug fixing, trouble shooting, preventative maintenance and data management.

Software Development Apprentice

As part of a specialised team working with a key client – a major public sector financial institution, you’ll support the delivery of effective financial accounting systems for the client’s products and services, through a range of software solutions. As well as day to day responsibilities extracting and managing data from our client’s systems, you’ll support the development and testing of both new and existing software solutions. In a varied role with exposure to a range of projects, you’ll develop new reporting tools, manage key software upgrades, and help to launch new products; all of which is focussed on supporting IT transformation services for our client.

Java Developer Apprentice

Working as part of our technical support and development team, this customer-facing role will see you deliver service support to resolve customer incidents as they arise. You’ll be engaged in the delivery of JAVA/J2EE platform software projects for high profile customers, whether that’s developing program logic for new applications or the analysis and modification of logic in existing applications. Through coding, testing, de-bugging, documentation and implementation across a range of Java software applications, you’ll learn from some of the industry’s most skilled professionals, making this is a fantastic opportunity to test and develop your technical skills.

Microsoft .Net Developer Apprentice

Working as part of our technical support and development team, this customer-facing role will see you deliver service support to resolve customer incidents as they arise. Software Development Apprentice

This is a fantastic opportunity for budding software developers to learn all about the dynamic Payments industry and supporting technologies. You’ll maintain and improve existing payment products we provide to household name clients, through implementation of software changes, and testing of software releases. You’ll also be involved in future product development, gaining practical hands-on experience of key technologies including embedded development, C programming language, Android, Java and Python scripting.

Apprentice DevOps Engineer

As part of a purpose-built application development team, you’ll contribute to the development of leading-edge solutions, delivered through Agile and DevOps methodologies. That will mean learning and using the latest programming languages and database technologies, all under the tutelage of some of our most senior technical professionals. You’ll build your experience through a variety of teams and could be developing working prototypes to support bid projects, building new products for clients or supporting planned change and ongoing maintenance for longer term projects.

Wolverhampton

Application Development Apprentice

 As part of our busy network solutions team, you’ll work to support and develop a range of Account Card application solutions for key clients. Working across a range of Microsoft technologies, you’ll maintain existing services, addressing any technical queries and issues that arise, as well as seeking to continuously improve the services we offer. You’ll also have the opportunity to be involved in the analysis and design of new software solutions and implementing those new solutions for our clients. This varied role offers invaluable software development experience, to kick start your career.
