If you’re interested in leading the future of technology, there’s no better place to start than our Level 3 Software Development  Apprenticeship. The 12-18 month programmes combine classroom training with hands on experience, with modules designed to teach you both the technical and  business skills you need to thrive in a long-term career as a software  developer.

You’ll work on a diverse range of tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment, developing your knowledge of the digital sector and learning how to create world-class customer solutions. If you’re a methodical and creative problem solver, with the determination to take on real responsibility as you grow into the role, this scheme is for you.

What you’ll cover

All our Software Development apprentices are supported in achieving a Software Development Technician level 3 qualification, an equivalent to A levels / Scottish Highers.  From there you’ll have the option to specialise with further certifications, which could see you improving your Java programming skills or learning the fundamentals of C#.

The programme will give you everything you need to take on a role as a fully-fledged software developer.

Qualifications you’ll achieve as part of your Software  Development Apprenticeship:

  • Advanced Apprenticeship Software Development Technician L3 (equivalent to A level / Highers educational level)
  • Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 8 Programmer (Java track)
  • Microsoft MTA Software Development Fundamentals (C# track)
  • BCS Systems Development Essentials (England only)

Entry requirements

For this scheme you’ll need 7 GCSEs / Scottish National 5’s or equivalent at grades 4-9 / A-C (including Maths and English), ideally including a qualification in ICT.

Crewe

Software Development Apprentice

You’ll have the opportunity to work on business critical applications that allow the UK rail industry to track trains across its network, process the information and pass it to train operators. You’ll be part of the team developing a new API to bring older legacy applications, written in a number of languages and technologies, under a new user interface. There will be opportunities to develop and apply your coding and testing skills across a range of practical challenges, including bug fixing, trouble shooting, preventative maintenance and data management.

Darlington

Software Development Apprentice

As a Software Development Apprentice, you’ll provide critical technical support for solutions and services as part of our UK Operational Rail Market team. Working directly with our customers within the rail industry, you’ll assess and resolve technical systems issues, working with colleagues to identify root-causes behind problems, before developing, testing and implementing permanent solutions. It’s a growing area of the business, where you’ll develop experience across the software development and support sector. If you’re a great communicator with a passion for solving complex problems, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to grow here.

Application Management Apprentice

This role will see you providing support for IT applications and solutions, from troubleshooting and system monitoring to incident resolution, in liaison with clients and suppliers. You’ll develop and implement fixes and enhancements to existing applications as well as developing and implementing new applications, using a range of tools and technologies. It’s a dynamic and constantly changing area, where you’ll learn how to adapt while taking on new technical challenges every day.

Livingston

Application Management Apprentice

This role will see you providing support for IT applications and solutions, from troubleshooting and system monitoring to incident resolution, in liaison with clients and suppliers. You’ll develop and implement fixes and enhancements to existing applications as well as developing and implementing new applications, using a range of tools and technologies. It’s a dynamic and constantly changing area, where you’ll learn how to adapt while taking on new technical challenges every day.

Nottingham

Technical Support Apprentice

As part of this busy technical support team, you’ll have a hands-on role analysing and resolving technical issues on systems critical to the successful running of the UK Rail Network. We’ll give you responsibility for investigating problems and the support of experienced colleagues in finding and implementing solutions. You’ll have the opportunity to design, develop and test software enhancements, extending both your technical and customer service skills. You’ll demonstrate your passion for technology and learn how to deliver real value to our customers.

Apprentice DevOps Engineer

As part of a purpose-built application development team, you’ll contribute to the development of leading edge solutions, delivered through Agile and DevOps methodologies. That will mean learning and using the latest programming languages and database technologies, all under the tutelage of some of our most senior technical professionals. You’ll build your experience through a variety of teams and could be developing working prototypes to support bid projects, building new products for clients or supporting planned change and ongoing maintenance for longer term projects.
