There will be no second chances or room for failure. It is not only the athletes, but also the IT team that has to deliver a perfect performance, training has started early!
Atos, under the direction of the London 2012 Technology Department and working together with is fellow technology partners, plays a key role in ensuring and testing that the technology used during the Games is ready to perform and deliver a gold medal performance. Without Atos, the Olympic Games as we know them would be a very different prospect. For example:
- The world’s media would not be informed of race results
- Commentators would only have access to the results information, as it appears on the stadia scoreboards
- Athletes and volunteers would be unable to get in to venues
To make sure we can deliver such a huge project on time, on budget and with the eyes of the world watching, we must test for every possible scenario. It is an absolutely crucial part of our preparations.
There are three components:
The Technology Lab – the Olympic Games under one roof The 2,000 sq/m Technology Lab is a miniature version of the 35 Olympic venues, with the IT systems for every sports event and venue being of tested to ensure the Games run smoothly.
Sports Test Events All the technology equipment from the Technology Lab will be deployed to the venue to be used in a real sporting event to test all the systems and processes. It will involve the sports federations and media and will take place this summer.
Technical rehearsals Simulating the busiest days of the Games, the technical rehearsals will test about 700 pre-defined operational scenarios including a flood, network disconnection, power failure and changes to the competition schedule.
