The 13th Asian Games were held in the capital of Thailand, Bangkok, between December 6 and December 20 1998. The Asian Games are staged every four years, in between the Olympic Games, for the purpose of deepening friendships and promoting sport among the people of Asia. This was the fourth time Bangkok had hosted the Games.
The Games are the largest Asian-based sports event, and are also the world's biggest regional multi-sports event, second only to the Olympic Games in the number of participating athletes and nations. Since the first Games, the scale of this event has been growing steadily. The 13th edition included 44 participant countries from all over Asia, and 36 sporting disciplines spread across three main venues.
