“Zaans Medical Center outsources IT to Atos”

The first hospital in the Netherlands to completely outsource its IT infrastructure

The Zaans Medical Center (ZMC) has signed an agreement with Atos, an international leader in digital services, to outsource its IT infrastructure. Atos is responsible for managing the workstations, servers, network, storage, backup-facilities, service desk and service-integration of ZMC. Atos will offer services based on an excellent new infrastructure from within its data centres in Eindhoven. The migration to this architecture takes place before ZMC moves to the new hospital that is currently under construction.

The outsourcing is part of the Zaans Medical Centre’s network strategy to concentrate on its core tasks and to outsource a number of support services to third parties in the transition to an entirely new hospital, which has to be ready at the end of 2016. ZMC sees IT as a support service, but also as an important cornerstone of the quality and efficiency of its core task: provision of healthcare. The ZMC, under the guidance of M&I/Partners and the Board of Directors, took care properly preparing the organization for the outsourcing and selecting the right IT-partner.

Janine Schuijt, Manager I&A of the Zaans Medical Center says: “The Zaans Medical Center selected Atos because their offer matches best with our specific needs and requirements, with attention to continuity in our business operations and in relation with our EMR system  EZIS from Chipsoft. In addition, we expect Atos to be a partner with whom we can come up with IT-solutions, in the new hospital, that would really contribute to our quality of care. ZMC is very satisfied with the manner in which Atos has participated in the selection procedure, including cooperation with ICTZ, our regular EZIS consulting partner.”

ZMC has an exemplary role

Theo Weydenfeld, Atos’ Commercial Director for Managed Services, says: “Healthcare in The Netherlands is at a high level, but is faced with the challenge of continuing to provide high quality care at justifiable costs. IT plays an important role in this. ZMC has an exemplary role in respect of other hospitals by concentrating on its primary care processes and outsourcing the IT. It is the first hospital in the Netherlands to completely outsource its IT infrastructure. We are convinced that many hospitals will follow this path. In this respect, we have developed a proof of concept in cooperation with our strategic partner Dell. We are proud of being able to support the ZMC and, in to doing so, make a contribution to better healthcare in the Netherlands.”

Mark van der Velden, principal advisor at M&I/Partners, comments: “In addition to innovations in the fields of EPDs, ERPs, e-health and the like, it is a virtually impossible task for these Care Institutions to maintain the basic-ICT facilities by themselves. Institutions are therefore increasingly looking for commercial partners to provide (parts of) the ICT-services. For the ZMC, we have compiled and successfully realized a clear outsourcing strategy (formulation strategy, procurement, establishing overall steering function).”
